I have recently been using the latest version of Aid4Mail to transfer about 10,000 emails. I found that the first few 100 emails came across quite quickly but, as the job progressed, the speed dropped substantially, by the end the speed had dropped to about 8 minutes per email. Has anyone else experienced this problem and does anyone know of a solution?

Thanks in anticipation

are these individual emails as files on the filesystem? if so you may be runng in to an issue with the filesystem and he handling of multiple files.

if not, then i dont know.

I'm sorry you're experiencing issues with Aid4Mail. The cause of this slow down is most likely external to Aid4Mail. What type of source mail are you processing and what is your target format?

I was copying the emails from the Yahoo server and converting them to .pdf. Aid4Mail was not the only tool that I had used but the only one to show the dramatic slow down that I described in my original post.

Since I was not concerned with forensic purity (I was only concerned with the content of the messages not the metadata) I had used Thunderbird simply as a proof of concept to ensure that I could access the mail server then Lotus notes to copy the whole of the message stream. This had worked well but for two problems it seemed to be impossible to copy the Send box notwithstanding what was said in the tech notes and the conversion to .pdf seemed to be less than straightforward.

Aid4Mail did the job completely but not without problems. I had hoped that I could simply point it at Yahoo and sit back and wait for the job to run to completion. The first problem I have set out above, namely the speed but, in addition, it fell over after a few 1000 emails. The symptom was a sudden change from creating .pdf's to attempting to print the output to a local printer. In the end I had to segment the file by date into chunks of a couple of thousand. I got the result that I wanted but with much more pain and time than I had allowed for. Not to mention a panicking Client who was up against his own deadline.

As an aside I have been in this trade for over 40 years and I have never had a supplier say, "mia culpa" when faced with a problem with his product )

Regards
Ron

Thanks for your detailed feedback Ron. We've had a couple of other users report similar performance issues with the PDF output, but not the sudden switch to sending data to a printer. So far we haven't been able to reproduce either issue at our end. Nevertheless, we'll continue to search for a solution…

Thanks for the prompt reply Eric. Would it be helpful if I were to run some more tests to try to narrow down the problem? I think that I still have access to the data.

Regards
Ron
