I would like to pose the question, what are the current dress codes that are required or preferred in the IT/DF work environments? As a 37 year old Marine Corps Veteran and a non traditional college student, I worry that I may be underdressing for my field by wearing jeans and a polo shirt, and over dressing by wearing khakis and a button up dress shirt. I see the younger guys wearing gym shorts and t-shirts to college but that just doesn't seem right? I would like to think that at college, you are not only going to school to earn a degree, but you also have a valuable opportunity to network with potential coworkers or bosses. Am I the one thinking wrong? So, I'm curious as to what the professionals wear to work daily? Thank you for the advice and I can't wait to see the responses! idea

My workplace standard polos and khakis

What I wear black khakis and a dress shirt

IMHO, jeans are always too casual for a professional workplace. Khakis are the sweet spot.

Wait - is the question "what should I wear to college"? If so, the only answer is surely "whatever the college allows"..?

Was he not his own boss?

Slacks, dress shirt (button down, or not), tie optional.

I would say that it depends on what you want to do.

Usually (not only in college, and not only on workplace) you can choose between two adjectives

  • inconspicuous
  • eye-catching

Choose the one that better reflects how you would like your attire to be described and dress accordingly (which of course is relative to your specific environment, or place where you live).

Compare (only loosely related) to tattoo's/piercings, etc. that also hints about "dressing codes"

Loving the poll results so far. Swim trunks and flip flops, FTW! Although, I'm not sure that's a good idea for the ladies, no matter how relaxed the office is. 😯

I show up in a button up shirt and always have a spare white shirt, tie, and jacket on standby in case I need to meet with a client. I find attorneys treat us with more professional respect if I make an effort. If they expect sloppy jeans and a printed t-shirt and get jacket and tie, they're already pleasently surprised at the first meeting. They're probably evaluating my potential to be a good expert witness at that first meeting, so I better make it look like I'm prepared.

Caveat…I do work for a CPA firm, so ties are the norm for managers and partners.

For college, I think a more relaxed dress is appropriate, but don't go overboard and wear something too messy or too revealing. Professors are more likely to treat you with respect if you at least dress neatly without going overboard. Jeans and polo are probably okay for class, and that might make you the best dressed person in class. For any presentations before the class, I'd do shirt and tie at a minimum. There's something about wearing a tie that instantly improves your posture and presence.

I can't believe what I'm seeing in the poll lol! Truth be known and jokes aside, it looks to be pretty much slacks or khakis and a dress shirt. I always feel better if I'm dressed in a button up with khakis anyway. Jeans and a polo are a kind of an every day thing when I'm not in uniform at my current job. I really like dressing nice with a long sleeve plaid Chaps button up and a pair of khakis. Makes me feel better about myself and lets everyone else around me know that I do care what I look like, and prefer to be surrounded by others who feel the same. Not that the clothes make the man, but you shouldn't come in to work with wrinkled clothes and a two day old pair of sweaty socks and a 5-o-clock shadow. Away from work, its shorts and flip-flops with a crazy logo printed right on the front! Awesome responses people and thank you so much! That was fun! Feel free to leave more comments and I think Ill keep watching the poll.

I don't believe this poll belongs on this site IMHO.

What to wear to college, this can't be serious. I see someone behind a keyboard saying " OK guys, I'm going to go to this professional forum and wait get this ROFLMAO I'm going to ask all these people from all over the World, what to wear to college ha ha ha h ah ah ha ha ha ha"
