Has anyone had any experience with Kerio Mail database files FDB?

I'm looking at some now and although Xways identifies them correctly and offers the option of extracting mails from these type of files it doesn't seem to be able to parse them at all.

I've worked with a Kerio Connect platform recently, but as all its mails were kept as separate EML files, and I can't see any trace of anything like FDB, it's pretty clear that you're looking at something else – perhaps something related to the Outlook connector?

Don't know anything about Xways support.

But as the file suffix is FDB, I'd check if it happens to be a Firebird database file. If it is, it may be possible to use standard Firebird utilities to export its contents. Look for support of embedded database – which means you don't have to install Firebird, but only need to get the correct .dll file.

Yes. They are Firebird databases, Kerio uses them for "light" installations without much data. Otherwise the data is stored in SQL Server for most of their products.

You can get a ODBC driver or a GUI to view them from http//www.firebirdsql.org/

The FDB files are the Exchange equivalent of OST I'm told. I have all the individual .eml files from the server and from backup archives, this is the last piece from the actual computer. I likely don't need them but I like to be thorough and get all available information.

I will look at the Firebird links, thanks for the pointer gents )

Hey, I'm back again.

I'm still having no joy with these FDB files.

I can see clear text via XWF within the FDB file so I can manually extract out the body of emails but it's really frustrating that I cant recover the emails entirely (attachments, headers etc).

None of the firebird database viewers I've been able to find can deal with a stand alone FDB file, they all seem to want to work in a server / client type environment.

What I've actually got is a disc image from an iMac which was running a bootcamp parition, using Outlook for the email client but going through a Kerio server…nightmare.

If I can figure out a way to get the image mounted and booted in VMware then I have the option to just export out the emails manually to PST via Outlook, but I can't get the mounted image to boot.

Using Liveview and FTK imager or Mount Image pro to mount the image. I have tried whole disk and just the bootcamp partition.

Has anyone managed to get a VM running from a configuration like this? My last option is to try and get an iMac to borrow, but not sure anyone will lend me one considering how tough it is to get to the hard drive.

Edit Oops just realised I can restore the image to a USB drive and try and boot from that, no hard drive removal needed…..now I just need to find an iMac 😉

You have to find the .DLL that is used for the embedded database – it's usually available as a separate download. Then place it in the same directory as the database viewer binary – it should replace the default .dll, which does the 'normal' connections to the database server – , or configure the viewer to use that .DLL .

As a Firebird database is contained in one single file, nothing more is required.

Hmmm.. doesn't X-Ways allow templates to be created?
Since you can see the data therefore not encrypted, maybe you can create one for the structure.
