Hi all,

Would the Encase or X-Ways users kindly mention if OCR is available on current versions? I'm looking to OCR mainly PDFs and TIFs so that search is effective.

I checked 1-2 years ago
Encase sales told me yes, and support told me no (after purchased a license)

X-Ways seemed to support doing it outside, but would recreate directory hierarchies. I'd take external if the item number were used instead, dealing with NTFS limitations is a little crazy.

Cheers,

Gabe

I don't know of EnCase or Xways having any sort of native OCR support and for me I'd not trust their OCR process up against a specialist piece of software.

For Xways the approach I would take would be to export the files that need to be OCR'd, OCR them with the tool of choice, then reimport the OCR'd files back into the case via 'add folder' option, you could then add those files to an evidence container if you choose.

Once you have them back in the case you can link them to the original files via report table associations.

Not sure on EnCase.

I use File Convert from Lucion Technologies for most of my OCR stuff, but am hoping to move to Maestro for big batch jobs if I can get the boss to spring for the money.
