Recovery on iPhone 4S

I am trying to image an iPhone 4S. I have the PIN for the phone.

The issue is that the phone is damaged, and while I can get it to recovery mode, or to DFU mode, it will not boot or update further than that.

Am I right to assume a 'recovery' (rather than an 'update') from iTunes will make any further recovery impossible? eg; with the encryption keys overwritten by the recover, any recovered data will be encrypted with the old keys?

Given my inability to get past DFU or Recovery mode, are there any Open Source options left for me to try? I have tried access with TinyUmbrella, iRecovery etc but can not get any further.

For example
Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode)
Product ID 0x1227
Vendor ID 0x05ac (Apple Inc.)
Version 0.00
Serial Number CPID8940 CPRV21 CPFM03 SCEP01 BDID08 ECID000000XXXXXXXXXX IBFL00 SRTG[iBoot-838.3]
Speed Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer Apple Inc.
Location ID 0x1a120000 / 4
Current Available (mA) 500
Current Required (mA) 500

# iRecovery -mv
Attempting to connect...
opening device 05ac1227...
Setting to configuration 1
Setting to interface 00
Connected to iPhone4,1, model n94ap, cpid 0x8940, bdid 0x08
DFU Mode

Thanks
Paul

Unfortunately, there's no way to do physical extraction on this phone (even if you used iOS Forensic Toolkit). Do you know what happened to it?

If you could describe the damage I might be able to help. If it is water damage, make sure the device is free of corrosion. High proof Isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush will scrub that out. Use compressed air as well to get the alcohol everywhere and let dry.

Also, I've had great success in using a heat gun or re-flow machine to heat the board up slowly to 212 Celsius. It is important not to let the board move or be touched while it is this hot or you risk board components shifting out of place. This will help rejoin solder in areas where it might be corroded away.
