I've got some drama taking place among family, my in-laws have been given false portrayal of my behavior by a 25 yr. old stepson. He is awful toward his kind hearted fragile mom. My 'better half' of 12 yrs. took him in to our home. I put the unbelievable behavior I witnessed under audio surveillance simply by leaving my smartphone w/voice record app behind as I left the home.

Today, although no criminal activity is there on the 1hr.43min.29sec. recording or anything of value in a civil court, there's proof for relatives who simply do not believe my explanations of the youngster's activity.

I have discovered that to make audible sound intelligible is no mean feat. Expecting to succeed as handily as I did remixing my home recordings of music 'back in the day', I have spent more than a few fruitless hours trying to hack what your craft accomplishes.

I live in Napa, ca. A firm I discovered online offers services @ $195 an hour. This for me is too costly, as is most anything outside my bills. My money's tight.

I give yourselves my Christian word I have no agenda in seeking to ply your trade on the recording involving moral turpitude of any kind.

Only to expose it in the recorded words, words now audible but NOT intelligible, of one I must undo slanderous efforts of that have been successfully deployed upon myself.

SIMPLY PUT, anybody here able to offer me direction as to how 'amateur hour' forensic audio enhancement might be accomplished by a man of humble means? I thank you for your kindness and time.

Lastly, I won't take offense if i'm told to 'get lost'. I'll just do as asked. I come to you like a panhandler. It is not a thing I do.

UPDATE Transferring my recording from the smart phone to my Olympus WS-210S digital voice recorder seems an obvious first step. In fact, this topic served a 2nd purpose a productive use for the time the recording plays.

3.5 mm stereo patch cord in place, I began w/menu of my Olympus product. Choices made were decidedly random. 'Low cut ON' was one, despite my cluelessness as to what it does.

Apparently this was NOT a good guess. Several persons are speaking in my recording. One, a police officer being disinformed by the youngster as of when my surveillance was carried out in our home, had a deep voice several octaves lower than he.

Prior reviews directly from the smart phone reflected it's capturing the officer's voice successfully. This was absent in the Olympus!

……Time to transfer it again, it would appear. This work need be done in the wee hours when my gf's Marlon Brando complex stricken son sleeps….fortunately this is 'till noon or later the next day!

ANYBODY GOT TIME TO SUGGEST SETTINGS ON THE OLYMPUS? I also chose 'Stereo XQ' as recording mode. Good call maybe?

I dunno. Hence, I'm here. Apologies if anyone finds me a nuisance.

There. Time for some shuteye, alarm will have me up to hit the stop button when the Olympus has completed the recording.

Here are the settings I chose for this attempt

Recording Mode HQ

Mic sense Conference. Dictation was used in the previous attempt.

Thanks, all.

Most probably what you want is a software capable of filtering noise and enhance (or damp) certain frequencies.
More or less this (in a non-professional setup) revolves around using Audacity
http//audacityteam.org/

Get the program (for the whatever OS you run) then google for "audacity enhance voice" (or similar, of course without the double quotes) you should find a number of related tutorials/videos), *like*

Thanks, jaclaz. I'm sure the program gets results far superior to the technology (circia '75 or so. graphic e.q., amplifier) I'm accustomed to-and yet posess and enjoy as my home audio!

yet my 2nd transfer to my voice recorder just finished out….I just gotta discover how well my new settings performed.

and thanks again.

…Back to the 'old drawing board', as they say. What a disappointment! Mysterious to me is distortion mimicking some seriously blown old school speakers….how could digital delivery malfunction so as to be indistinguishable from fried coils that drive paper cones???

….reminds me of the time I arced, while installing my new pioneer supertuner, one of my Jensen triaxial speakers! Oh, it was sad….

…time to go w/jaclaz's lead.

anybody here familiar w/the Olympus model #WS-210S voice recorder? which 'Recording Mode' would you suggest? (we're recording from an, lg android's voice record app) HQ,SP, LP, Stereo XQ, Stereo HQ, or Stereo SP? Conference or Digital for 'Mike Sense'? 'LowCut' on or off? 'Voice Filter' on or off? Does the chosen speed have significance?

Also, I set the Lg @ full volume. correct, or other than?

I miss the laptop I had until falling debris in the Napa Quake destroyed it. An HP Pavillion, it featured 2, not 1 as the new one i'm on now, 3.5 mm jacks-an input AND an output!

Anybody as happens to be acquainted w/the tecchie that s. canned that feature be sure to pass along how much I admire his/her brilliant design. (NOT!)

This is why I must transfer to the Olympus so as to avail my layout of USB input cap., oh well.

time to hack it!

Well, if you recorded the *whatever* from your smartphone, it is stored there digitally.

Transferring it to *anything else* should be done by means of copying (and if needed converting) the actual digital file.

If you transfer it via audio cable you are essentially converting it from digital to analog, and then your Olympus digital recorder will re-convert it from analog to digital, these conversions tend to be lossy, due to several reasons, including the possibility of interferences/noise introduced in the process.

What you should do would be to find out which audio file format your phone uses and then find a way to transfer/copy the file to a computer, I presume that the smartphone uses a "common" or "known" format, such as .wav or .mp3 or similar but this may depend on make/model.

Regardless of any technical challenges, I would advise treading carefully on who you share the information that you recorded this person illicitly with, or it could end up becoming a court matter. I know nothing about US law, let alone in specific states but it's just worth bearing in mind. If this individual is as unpleasant as you say, they could end up pursuing you for illegal 'wiretapping' or similar http//stimmel-law.com/ru/article/secret-recording-conversations-california-crime

Just a thought. Hope it all blows over regardless.

A little background on forensic audio work.
An Introduction to Forensic Audio

Then you will need some software
Audacity
dTective - Forensic Clarification and Analysis Solutions for Video - Image - Audio
Forensic Audio Software - DAC QuickEnhance
Audio Forensics Software

Then you will need some training
Forensic Video, Imaging and Audio Analysis Training

But more importantly, before you consider any of that you need to have an understanding of law (and I am using CA based on your user account)

California Wiretapping Law
California's wiretapping law is a "two-party consent" law. California makes it a crime to record or eavesdrop on any confidential communication, including a private conversation or telephone call, without the consent of all parties to the conversation. See Cal. Penal Code § 632. The statute applies to "confidential communications" – i.e., conversations in which one of the parties has an objectively reasonable expectation that no one is listening in or overhearing the conversation. See Flanagan v. Flanagan, 41 P.3d 575, 576-77, 578-82 (Cal. 2002). A California appellate court has ruled that this statute applies to the use of hidden video cameras to record conversations as well. See California v. Gibbons, 215 Cal. App. 3d 1204 (Cal Ct. App. 1989).

If you are recording someone without their knowledge in a public or semi-public place like a street or restaurant, the person whom you're recording may or may not have "an objectively reasonable expectation that no one is listening in or overhearing the conversation," and the reasonableness of the expectation would depend on the particular factual circumstances. Therefore, you cannot necessarily assume that you are in the clear simply because you are in a public place.

If you are operating in California, you should always get the consent of all parties before recording any conversation that common sense tells you might be "private" or "confidential." In addition to subjecting you to criminal prosecution, violating the California wiretapping law can expose you to a civil lawsuit for damages by an injured party. See Cal. Penal Code § 637.2.
