Hello,

Iam a computer forensics investigator from Greece, I currently own my own firm (the only one in the private sector) and i am building my lab.
I would like to ask your opinion on where should i buy IEF or BECU as my main forensic investigation, platform.
I tried both of them in couple of cases and i was satisfied by both of them. My main investigation devices are 50% mobile and 50% computers/mac.

Considering that the country is under capital controls, and the bad situation (economically) i can only afford one of them and probably would be my only evidence centre for the next couple of years.

Any opinion would be much appreciated and thank you all for your time

Regards,
Vasileios Georgopoulos

i've tried both of them on separate cases, on trial period. Both seemed to perform as expected.

P.S. any other platform that supports mobile analysis can also be considered within this price range

bs3xy,

I have found IEF invaluable in case after case. I do not have experience with the Belkasoft product so I cannot comment there.

I do very much recommend purchasing IEF's business module (Windows artifacts), even though it costs extra.

What types of cases (and devices) do you anticipate encountering? Based upon your response I can provide a little better response.

Some other tools I recommend from personal use

Passmark's OSForensics
BlackLight's BlackBag
TZWorks
GetData's Forensic Explorer
Compelson Phone Forensic Express
Cellebrite
Page-Vault
Aid4Mail

I strongly recommend Oxygen Software (http//www.oxygen-forensic.com/en/). It is a good tool for mobile forensics. It is like Cellebrite, but Oxygen is cheaper.

In this instance I would recommend neither.

If you can afford only ONE tool then as good as these tools are they only support certain artifacts. You need to be looking at FTK, Encase, XWays etc. All of these can do the majority of what IEF/Belkasoft can do but they can also do a whole host of stuff that IEF and BelkaSoft can't.

The cases i usually have until now are data extraction from phones like viber, gps loc, messengers etc, data extraction from windows and mac machines like website history files system info etc. (for mobile devices im looking for something that can analyse and extract data from an image I have managed with imaging to tools to extract. Usually most of the phones that come to me are unlocked or i have the passcode/pin.

My budget is around 3k $.

Vasileios,
I had the same choice to make as you but for different reasons. After a lot of research I was still undecided based on features etc. So I approached both organizations using the persona of a student. My thinking was that a student is the lowliest person on earth from a vendor’s point of view due to their lack of funding. Further along that line if one of the companies was willing to help me in my student guise their support after the sale would probably be pretty good. To be blunt the IEF folks blew me off and the Belkasoft team welcomed me to the fold, implemented a few ideas I had, and treated me like a real customer. After the sale the support from Belkasoft has continued to be very good.

I have had contact with Yuri (Belkasoft) and Jad (Magnet). May be Jad is a busy person. Contact with Jad was bad. Yuri is a friendly person. He realized some my ideas in Belkasoft.
