BEST UNIVERSITIES FOR COMPUTING FORENSIC IN UK?

Post Posted: Sun Jul 20, 2014 4:47 pm

Hello,

I am thinking to study a MSc in Computing Forensic in UK. I have two questions about that.

1-Could anyone give me some advice about which university will be the best to study this?

2-Which university has the best employability program once you finished?

thank you in advance

Hi,

I just wanted to add my two cents.

I'm currently completing my MSc in Digital Investigation & Forensic Computing at UCD in Dublin, Ireland by distance education (you can log in and participate live in all classes just like being there and you only need to be physically present for a few days for exams) and I highly recommend it.

I'm already a digital forensics professional with over five years professional experience and was looking for something I could do alongside my job just to obtain a more formal qualification and am very happy with this programme - you learn a good deal of everything: Common Law and European Civil Law, eDiscovery, Malware Analysis, Investigative Techniques, Corporate Investigations, Computer Forensics, Web Application Security Testing, ... and the staff are all active computer forensics professionals who really know what they are doing and, as such, everything is very practical and "real world".

It's great, inexpensive, and you can participate from basically anywhere in the world (I've even attended classes live during a trainride home using my iPhone and taking notes on paper). You should seriously check it out.

Cheers,

Joe

I'll chip in here too, similar to the previous poster im currently almost half way through my MSc Advanced Security & Digital Forensics @ Edinburgh Napier Uni. I did quite a bit of research before deciding who to do it with. Cost was also a factor ofcourse as I paid for it myself so no funding/grant etc.. Alot of the 'considered more prestigious' & 'big name' Uni's prices were asking for an extortionate amount of money for similar themed Masters, whatever the name they chose to call it - as you can see the 1 I am on doesn't say cybersecurity but it essentially is, or rather covers various facets of what would be considered cybersecurity - there's a whole debate surrounding the naming of degrees etc somewhere on the net & a lot of Unis took that word out as it's considered too 'generalised' - a whole debate in itself Smile

Holloway & Cranfield in many circles are considered top notch in the 'general' cybersecurity/information security arena but cost can become a factor.. Fine balance between what you want to learn, the teaching (& method of delivery), the cost & as you've mentioned employability afterwards etc..

You've also then got ACE (Academic Centres of Excellence) in the Cybersecurity field, those who have achieved the 'stamp' so far anyway GCHQ ACE

I chose Napier after several days of research, the programme can be done Full Time, Part Time or via Distance learning. I looked/checked reviews & looked @ what they had to offer compared to others. I can also highly recommend the Uni I am with it but appreciate it's difficult to compare with other academic institutions teaching similar programmes as who would do several to get a comparison eh Confused . So you're looking @ an external body to certify it as being 'good' or 'fit for purpose' kind of thing. And, it just so happens...

Take a look at this article which may help & was also publicised in the media, GCHQ have recently (within the last 2 weeks) certified 6 Masters degrees as meeting their stringent requirements/expectations for Cybersecurity related Programmes of study. There are fuller details in the article and im happy to say Edinburgh Napier is 1 of those mentioned and the MSc im doing is the degree that's been certified by them.

Only 6 Masters programmes within the UK have so far achieved their certification.

Good luck with whichever Uni you decide on, it is a fascinating topic/area.

Hi V1nny,

Thanks for your post on this. How is your study so far at the Edingburg Napier? Have you thoroughly enjoyed/appreciated the modules taught? I'm also considering enrolling but thought chatting to an existing candidate like yourself might be helpful.

I'm a bit concerned though that the link below doesn't show Napier as one of the universities but it's possible this is a different certifying body?
