I've only received training on performing extractions from mobile GPS devices. Apart from the occasional story about in car navigation system examinations, I haven't seen much discussion on the topic.

I've been asked about possibly retrieving data from a Mercedes S550 in car navigation system. I've spent a bit of time researching the comand system built into these vehicles, but haven't had much luck. Can anyone point me in a possible direction on how these system's work, and if it is possible to extract data from them?

Many thanks!

I've done an examination of an in car navigation system only once before, and it was a photgraphic transcribe for simplicity.

I've not researched this particular model, but how does it update the maps and route data? Is it similar to TomTom Live, where updates are transmitted to the device as it is in transit? Or can the user manually update through a USB or Ethernet port? If a manual update is possible, then there is an opportunity for you to image the device that way.

You might want to contact Berla Corp. They make a product for examination of in vehicle entertainment systems, i.e. GPS and so on. They also provide training in that area.
