All - I have some email in MBOX format and am wondering about the purpose of one of the header lines.

the structure follows this pattern

From abc@def.com Tue May 12 101553 AM 2008
48212
Received from xyz.def.com ([123.123.123.123]) by …….

Specifically I am wondering what the purpose of the number between the From and Received lines is. I believe this data did originally come from a mac system and while the majority of the MBOX files I have from this custodian follow this convention, some do not contain the additional number between the FROM and RECEIVED lines.

Any insight greatly appreciated. I havent yet been able to find any documentation that mentions this number as a variant to the format.

Regards

Follow up - i've a feeling based on some additional testing\research that this standalone numeric entry might have something to do with the Content-Length… but am not 100% sure

I found an article which describes pretty well the mbox format and has many links with references

http//www.digitalpreservation.gov/formats/fdd/fdd000383.shtml

I hope it helps.
