Job description

The Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) Directorate provides HMRC with an effective investigation arm to enforce the Exchequer’s Compliance Policies and deliver against the strategic responsibilities across direct, indirect tax, criminal finance, excise regimes and frontiers.

FIS Digital Support & Innovation branch is responsible for the provision of a range of technical and forensic capabilities to FIS and the wider HMRC in support of criminal and civil investigations.

The primary role is to provide specialist advice, guidance and support to HMRC and CPS in relation to criminal investigations by collecting, analysing and presenting digital evidence in support of criminal prosecutions. Extensive liaison with case investigators and prosecutors will be involved. You will assist Senior Forensic Practitioners in large and complex cases, and be responsible for basic case management tasks and mobile phone analysis.

Essential Skills:

Significant experience with computer hardware, operating systems and software.

Desirable Skills:
• Knowledge of Mac, Linux or Unix
• Network and server infrastructure
• Electronics experience
• Qualifications and certifications held may include (but are not limited to): BSc; EnCE; ACE; CCE; A+; MCP
• Programming experience

Duties include
• examination of items containing electronically stored information
• production of primary digital evidence in the form of forensic images
• identifing forensically sound solutions to emerging technological challenges
• writing detailed technical witness statements for use in criminal proceedings
• supporting Senior/Higher Digital Forensic Practitioners
• assisting with the extraction, examination and analysis of information from seized digital material.
• using proven forensic investigation methods to analyse forensic images, under the guidance of the forensic case manager.
• appearance in court, where you will be expected to provide explanations to assist the Court in understanding complex technical matters.
