[Split from this topic]

Jaclaz,

I have noticed you have been commenting on a number of forum posts with no advice or help, just criticizing the forum topics and other people's advice.

I'm sure you know this is a website for help/advice/discussion etc. Not an opportunity to scrutinize every member's replies or posts.

I have noticed this on a number of occasions.

Jaclaz subscribes to the Socratic method http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socratic_method of learning through enquiry. It's a perfectly valid way to help someone learn, even if it's not what the learner wants.

If you're mad at him, it would appear you would be doing similar things. I mean not offering any help.

Well, I am sure you will have noticed also the (very few) times I actually helped people, WHEN they were actually asking questions in the "smart" way, and when this didn't happen, how I attempted to tell them how questions should actually be asked the "smart" way.

If you want to do some comparison statistics about the percentage of posts in which someone criticized some other people's post, you are at least at 1/14 i.e. 7.14%, you will need to find x posts of mine doing the same that divided by 1083 gives a bigger percentage, i.e. x>77.

@jaclaz, I share Jonathan's feelings about your first post in this thread - comments in that tone are always going to derail further discussion. Let's not go over this ground again and let this be an end of it, thank you.

This forum seems to be a magnet for SFQs.

You need to forensically examine a gambling machine? Ok, great - first things first speak to the manufacturer and see if they're willing to help. Have you done that?

OK, I'll try my best to be more Politically Correct.

Edited the post in question.

Don't do that. Prefer correct over politically correct any day.
Your answers have helped me many times.

re gambling machines

-acquire all storage from device
-contact manufacturer re device , ask them
-come back to forum and ask while providing details of the machine. Model number … etc.

The two are not mutually exclusive are they? Can someone not be both, or are we forced to pick one?

I lurk a lot on this site. I read it almost everyday, but often don't feel strongly enough to post. I can see how many users would feel that 5 replies saying "model?", "need more details", "google it" or some outright sarcastic comment isn't helpful.

Considering this is a professional forum people seem to interact like children.

Are there too many ego's at play here, or are people just getting off on being an a*s to someone who asks for help? Jaclaz is not the "sole villian" here. Having read the socratic method explanation I can see the good intentions behind his posts (and he does respond a lot to people in need). Jaclaz has undeniably helped me think about topics just from reading his responses - I'm grateful to him.

However the trend of posts that are outright off putting and insulting to others is upsetting. "If you don't have anything nice to say…" why jump on a band wagon to belittle someone who has reached out to *the* authorative community on digital forensics for help?

Some who ask here are new to the field, students or not even in the field think "confused lawyer" they are probably already intimidated before hitting the post button.

Less drama, more knowledge please! We're all in this community/professional field/journey together.

Apologies for derailing the post further.
