I'm working on a job where I've found a lot of files in the Adobe/CameraRaw/Cache folder named Cache00000000001.dat.
I've done a little digging and found that they are to do with picture files viewed through Adobe, relating to Digital Negatives (DNG) and RAW camera formats.
I ran the usual carving tool for pictures (C4ALL Enscript) against all the dat files for all formats, no joy.
Has anyone had any luck in getting pictures back from here?
These might be of interest

Your mileage may (and unfortunately will) vary, see the home page of one of the recommended tools

LRViewer has been withdrawn because it has become impossible to keep up with changes to Lightroom. However, because it might be helpful in recovering previews, the following links may be used to download it
Strangely in this case the "right" keyword was "lightroom" (and not "Camera Raw" or "CameraRaw")

Cheers Jaclaz,
Unfortunately Lightroom doesn't appear to be installed on this system and the cache files these seem to refer to are Lightroom specific, the files associated with these are .lrcat, .lrdb and I cannot find any of these on the system (so far).
From some of the reading from Adobe its looking like these files are actually partially processed images and may not contain any actual pictures.
However I'll be doing more work on this
I had gathered from the given link that CameraRaw is a sort of "common cache preview of partially elaborated images" common to Lightroom and Photoshop (CS3 is mentioned here and there) and possibly a number of other Adobe programs.
It is well possible that (as the given warning implies) that formats and even way that worked has changed though.
The .dat files are (or were) connected to actual previews, see
http//
I've just purged my Cache via prefernces. I've then gone to an older folder and selected all, then I've gone to Library>Previews>Render 11 Previews. Lightroom scans for previews. Then it starts creating previews. As I looking at my Camera Raw Cache, I can see that for every 11 Preview being created, I have a Camera Raw Cache .dat file created.

Thanks for the help so far.
I have tried using a carving tool that supports raw image format to see if I could get any results (Adroit Photo Forensics), no joy.
Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your view) I've located what I was looking for in the Adobe Bridge Cache, although I would like to look at these raw cache dat files further.
If I find anything of use I will post the results

I would say fortunately D , but it is a giant leap for you and a small step for mankind 😯

Yep, that would be nice. )
OT oops , since you mentioned again Adroit, and of course ONLY IF and WHEN you have some time to "play" with Adroit Photo Forensics, I would appreciate a favour, if you could verify if it actually can recover these kind of images

You can get a free demo of the product of the website (fill in a request form) which should give you the results you need.
The demo is pretty much fully functional, but no reporting features and you can't save cases, however if your just looking to see if it can recover pictures, should be enough.
Thanks for the help so far.

Hi minime2k9,
If there are no privacy issues, and you are able to send us one of the dat files we would love to look at it. If we find anything we would let you know.
Pasha,
Thank you for the offer.
Unfortunately, with the job relating to IIC, that won't be possible.
I will however look at possibly creating my own .dat files and sending them, this is subject to me getting time!
