My motherboard has died. I was running an ASUS Rampage IV Extreme and now looking for recommendations. I run an Intel 2011 socket (x79) chip and would like to keep it. I know Gigabyte was a highly recommended board for a while and used in several boxes. Those of you who have built your own boxes would you care to share?

Thanks,
Dave

Funny you mention the Rampage IV Extreme, because I just speced that exact motherboard out.
I cannot find much better board at or better cost/return for $440.

I have been using the RIVE since it was released with out too much trouble. It works with my LSI 9265 RAID setup very well.

But the board has had DIMM slot troubles. Its a clean setup and per memtest, the RAM works fine when testing stick by stick. Oddly, when viewing the DIMM slots in the UEFI all 8 sticks of 8gb are recognized at their XMP timings; however, windows and third party utilities do not recognize all 8.

The RIVE is feature packed - this I will not argue. I do wish it had a second NIC. I often image to eSata from a Tableau and find disconnecting the drive often locks up my system with this board. Yet, with the Rampage III Formula which I have been using in a distribute processing box hot swapping eSata seems has worked just fine. There are a few other minor nuisances and "features" but they are relatively negligible.

I was looking at the ASROCK Extreme 11 for replacement. It's been years since I've used an ASROCK board and it seems to be one of the three highest recommended boards.

Ah, crud maybe I will try another RIVE in case mine is just a lemon.

I honestly would stick with the ASUS board. In my experience, I have had the best results with ASUS, having tried MSI, ASUS, GIGABYTE, and ASRock. If you want to try something else. I would recommend the MSI Big Bang-XPower II. Here is the newegg url to it. http//www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130626

Did you read that link you sent him to?

42 of 117 motherboards caught fire and sparked.

Fake gatling gun on the motherboard causes an arc of sparking which frys the MB.

I'd say stay away from that board.

Read the specs and a couple reviews, but must of missed the one with all the arcing problems. Interesting how it won the "AnandTech Editor Choice Award" with that reported issue. If that is the case then I agree with forensicakb, it would not be a good choice of motherboard. A big -1 for MSI in my book. @forensicakb nice catch!

Went with another ASUS RIVE and added 64GB of Corsair 1866 RAM.

Everything works fine EXCEPT I can not get Windows to report the full 64GB of RAM in the System window. The UEFI BIOS reports ~48GB in the system info screen, the DIMM slots show all occupied and add to 64GB. Using CPUID all 64GB are recognized. Quite the puzzle really.

memtest passed fine.

BIOS is up to date and I can find some other similar reported issues using my trusty googling skills, but haven't found many fixes.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Just wondering if you ever resolved this RAM issue with this board?

I've heard loads of issues in the past with high RAM volume not being seen by windows. The max RAM for Professional W7 and up is 192GB so it's not that anyway. I'd be interested in hearing your solution also.
