Hi ,

First post here and it may be a long one, I apologize in advance.

Basically I would like to hear from experienced people in the field, I want to buy one of the larger companies compete forensic toolkits and start processing phone/tablets as a side job.

I like in a small town 20k people and there is no body local offering this type of service.

I figured client base would be

1. Lawyers(mainly divorce cases)

2. Concerned parents that want to know what their child is up to

3. Cheating spouses

4. local law enforcement that do not/can't wait on the long wait times from their labs(Don't know if this ever happens)

So far I have called a couple of local law offices and they seemed pretty interested. That is the extent of market research I have done.

Myself I have a very heavy tech background , I started as a hardware tech (7 years) and am currently a software analyst/programmer . My forensic education rests in a couple of books from amazon.

I would love and very much appreciate your feed back concerning viability of my plans and nudges in the right directions.

The more I read the more I search forums I can see this as a true passion because it makes a difference and is so intriguing to me , plus I love a challenge.

Thanks in advance for your replies ,

Erin Leathers

This is one of many threads that are similar to this and it contains many of the answers to your questions on phone forensic software tools http//www.forensicfocus.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=11590/

In addition to this I would look into alternative software tools specifically for SIM card's and Memory Card's if your looking at doing this for LE purposes. E.G. SIM card's - I find USIM Detective to be a great tool for analysing/acquiring maximum SIM data as possible. It may well be that instead of an all in one solution, it may be more cost effective for you to purchase individual tools that will do the same or even a better job! At the end of the day, you need to weigh up how many digital devices your looking to examine and if it is cost effective to purchase one of the most expensive software tools or whether or not you could purchase a smaller solution that will do the job for you - plus there are some decent free tools out there!

Furthermore, it's all well and good you using the software tools but you need to be familiar with the guidelines (in UK ACPO) and possibly invest in training?

I hope this helps and give's you something to think about! Good luck! )

I would echo this statement. Anybody can press a button and get data from a device. But without correct handling and training any data recovered may be tainted and inadmissible.

If you are in the UK I can personally attest to the quality of training from Control-F, Kevin Mansell is a fantastic trainer and really knows his stuff.

www.controlf.net

If you are US based then Sans or Teel technologies also provide exceptionally good training, though that is feedback from friends/colleagues/acquaintances rather then personal experience.

Good luck.

I don't know anything about the trade, but I would think liability would be a huge issue. It's probably easy/possible to screw up a job. As already mentioned, tainted evidence and lost/corrupted data come to mind. States and municipalities might even have licensing and insurance/bonding requirements for their approved vendors.

Nice idea of startup specializing in mobile forensic!
How much would the initial investment is required to purchase the software?
What software should adopt, or xRy Cellebrite?

Maybe a good question (while you jolt down your business plan) could be
How much time (which is money) will be needed to get an adequate knowledge in the field?
(and don't forget the actual hardware)

I am sorry to be negative but this worries me. You will be touting your service as an expert but as admitted above you have no experience or qualifications at all in the field.

I would suggest that the only sensible route to working part time in this field is to start full time working for someone else and get some experience and then after a good few years go part time.

Peoples lives and liberty may depend on the quality of your work. You really need to be pretty confident you will get it right from day one.

Vind, for equipment quotations you should ask directly to the vendors.

yet as Paul said, it's not just a matter of equipment.

working in the forensics field is not like opening a data recovery business, there is A LOT MORE involved, and before starting a career, I (and i think many others) would recommend you to strengthen your skills via proper education, training or by working in a team with seniors supervising your work.

you will be "playing" with people's life
