hi all, anyone know which files I need to amend to point to the second drive that was imaged… I would like to be able to boot the second hard drive from the images supplied to me already (an no possibility of doing an image myself).
Had a look at the vmsd and the vmxf - made changes to the vmsd, the image boots correctly but I still can't see the secondary drive.. the second option to boot the doesnt work.
anyone?
Can you not just create a separate VM from the second drive using LiveView or similar?
I am sure, there will be lots off people to assist you, but my guess is that not many people underst00d your question. I am definately one of them. VMware has a wizard to add hdd or existing vmdk files (dd image is also easy to convert/ add) if this is what you are after.
I would try Liveview. As part of the setup it offers the opportunity to point to more than one image file, which would lead me to assume that you could include both drives. It should then boot up as per normal and offer the choice of which system to boot.
In my experience Liveview is a bit more reliable than VMware for this type of thing.
Otherwise what about restoring the Images to physical hard drives and then booting a physical machine as opposed to virtual.
As previously mentioned, your initial post is not very clear.
sorry all my apologies…
… should have said the images were of a system that was dual booted, when trying to boot the images via vm - one works and gives the options to boot two xp images, the second does not work and gives the ntldr missing error, so it needs the first drive to boot… so I just wanted to point the second drive at the first -
the liveview bit might be worth trying, just need to get a copy of vmware workstation now as it doesn't work without it!
oh and thanks all for the replies )
Liveview just requires VMplayer which is free.
not according to the version I have installed, it comes up with it required vmware workstation or vmware server…
If all it's needed is to boot a second install of (WHAT system XP? - judging from the "missing ntldr") on a second hard disk.
All you need is a XP boot floppy.

More generally the more details you provide, the more likely is that you get a proper help/suggestions, sentences like this

How the HECK are we supposed to know WHICH version you installed?
Please start from the beginning, describing EXACTLY WHAT you have in your hands, including the programs (with EXACT version) that you attempted to run the images in, are they .vmdk files, "full", "sparse" or "growing", are they "RAW" images", "whole" VM's, etc.,.
WHY you want to actually boot off them?
