Mobile Forensics Investigating Connection Records Cell Site Analysis

This two day course from Sam Raincock of SRC will provide students with an overview of connection records including connection charting, correlating evidence with mobile devices and how to effectively investigate cases involving connection records and mobile evidence.

The course will also include an overview of cell site analysis including the types of connection records required and an introduction to the techniques and their limitations.


Course Content

The course will comprise of lectures, practical exercises and group investigations covering the following topics:

- The type of information available in UK and Ireland connection records.

- How to obtain connection records from the network provider. What to request for your case.

- How to chart and interpret connection behaviour.

- How to effectively use network provider identification and connection record information to potentially link telephones to individuals.

- Cross-correlation of evidence. Combining connection record and handset evidence and obtaining time offsets.

- Investigating the full range of cases where mobile evidence may assist and learning when to experiment with mobile devices.

- How to consider security and error rates in connection records. Asking the right questions.

- Examining the different record formats used by providers and considering their changes over time. Investigating anomalies.

- How to make the data, not your assumptions, drive your investigation.

- An introduction to Cell Site Analysis including the techniques available and their limitations.


Audience

This course is intended for individuals already working in the forensic telecommunications field, either examining mobile telephones or connection records. Although the course will be specific to connection records from the UK and Ireland, the principles of charting and correlating evidence are applicable to any connection records.

A certificate of attendance and course material to keep will be provided.


Dates, Venue and Costs

The course will be provided in the Malmaison Hotel, Birmingham on 23rd - 24th August 2010 running from 9am - 5pm each day (9am registration for 9:30am start on the first day). The hotel is located within 5 minutes walk of Birmingham New Street railway station. Lunch and refreshments are included each day.

Due to the type of course, places are strictly limited to provide students with the appropriate contact time and group sizes.

The cost of the two day course is £749 + VAT. For those requiring an overnight stay, rooms are available at the Malmaison hotel at the discounted rate of £79 per night for bed and breakfast. A reservation code for this discounted rate will be made available at the time of booking.

Samantha Raincock BSc (Hons), MSc, CCE, MBCS, CEng MIET is a digital forensics consultant/expert witness, trainer and IT Security specialist. She has produced over 270 reports/statements in digital evidence cases for Courts in the UK and Ireland including cases that have been heard in the Old Bailey or Central Criminal Court in Dublin. She has provided verbal testimony in England (Crown and Magistrate) and in Ireland (Criminal Court) and conducted in excess of 50 case conferences with barristers including Queen's Counsel and Senior Counsels. Sam is currently an assessor with the American Association for Laboratory Accredidation (A2LA) in the digital forensic areas.
