ElcomSoft and Oxygen Software Enable Forensic Access to Encrypted iPhones
NewsElcomSoft Co. Ltd. announces the availability of Elcomsoft iPhone Password Breaker, a GPU-accelerated password recovery tool to unlock encrypted iPhone and iPod Touch backups. For a limited time, the pre-release version of the new password recovery product is available free of charge...

Elcomsoft iPhone Password Breaker and Oxygen Forensic Suite offer the complement of the tools to grant forensic access to information stored in Apple devices by recovering password-protected backups to iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3GS as well as iPod Touch 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Gen. The new ElcomSoft password recovery tool works with offline backups, supports original and “jailbroken” devices, and does not require Apple iTunes to be installed.

After finding the password, unlocked backups can be loaded into Oxygen Forensics for iPhone or Oxygen Forensic Suite for detailed investigation and preparation of forensic reports.

Background
According to Gartner reports, Apple’s share of worldwide smartphone sales grows steadily. Accounting for 5.3 percent of new smartphones sold in the first quarter of 2008, Apple’s share rose to 10.8 percent or the total of 3.9 million devices in the first quarter of 2009. Various sources estimate that 17 to 18 percent of all smartphones used are manufactured by Apple.

Introduced with Apple iTunes 8.1, password-protected backups are protected with strong encryption algorithms and require iPod/iPhone firmware 3.x or later. iPhone backups contain essential information about the use of the device, including phone books, call logs, SMS archives, calendars, camera snapshots, voice mail and email account settings, applications, Web browsing history and cache. In addition, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS store information about the latest GPS location of the device.

About Elcomsoft iPhone Password Breaker:
Equipped with advanced dictionary attacks and a wide range of permutations, Elcomsoft iPhone Password Breaker is the first commercially available forensic tool to grant access to information stored in Apple devices while employing ATI and NVIDIA hardware to speed up password recovery of data backups of original and modified (“jailbroken”) iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, and iPod Touch 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Gen devices.

The new password recovery tool unlocks access to information stored in password-protected iPhone and iPod backups by recovering the original password. Featuring ElcomSoft patent-pending GPU acceleration, the new password recovery tool unlocks encrypted backups orders of magnitude faster than traditional CPU-only algorithms. The new password recovery tool enables GPU-accelerated performance on multiple high-end or consumer video cards based on NVIDIA and ATI chip sets.

Elcomsoft iPhone Password Breaker operates directly with backup data stored on a local PC, with no need to have Apple iTunes installed.

About Oxygen Forensics for iPhone and Oxygen Forensic Suite:
Oxygen Forensics for iPhone and Oxygen Forensic Suite are mobile forensic applications that go beyond standard logical analysis of cell phones, smartphones and PDAs. The use of advanced proprietary protocols permits forensic tools by Oxygen Software to extract more data than usually available to other forensic packages.

In collaboration with ElcomSoft, Oxygen Software enables forensic access to password-protected information stored in iPhone/iPod devices and backups. Loading password-protected backup functionality allows the examiner to use state of the art Oxygen Forensic Suite interface and features to analyze the information and find evidence.
