Course description

The course covers a broad range of computing techniques and technologies, with a special emphasis on detecting the misuse of computer systems via the internet and personal users. You will initially study core computing principles and practice, before moving on to the specialised skills you’ll need for detecting and preventing the abuse and misuse of computers.

The following is an indicative list of modules and is not intended as a definitive list. Those listed here may also be a mixture of core and optional modules.

Year 1

- Fundamental Programming Concepts
- Mathematics for Statistics 1 and 2
- Object-Oriented Programming with Java
- Introduction to Probability and Statistics
- HTML Programming and Internet Tools

Year 2

- Software Development with Java Databases
- Web Technologies
- Operating Systems and Networking
- Biometric Authentication Technologies

Year 3

- Computer Forensics
- Internet Security
- Option modules (eg Scientific Visualisation, Image Processing, Internet security)
- Project


Entry requirements

Typical offer

- Points: 260
- Units: to include two A-levels or equivalent
- Subjects: A-level Mathematics is required for Cyber Security & Computer Forensics with Mathematics joint honours (G4G1 & G4GC). Other combinations may require specific A-levels (contact our Admissions Co-ordinator for further details. General Studies not normally accepted in tariff. Key Skills points not accepted in tariff.
- Plus GCSE (A–C): five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics (grade B). Level 2 Key Skills may also be considered.

Other entry routes

- Computing and Mathematics foundation year.
- We will consider a range of alternative qualifications or experience that is equivalent to the typical offer. Applications from international students with equivalent qualifications are welcome.
