Course description
MSc in Forensic Computing and Cybercrime Investigation programme is an international part-time MSc level programme, which is restricted to police officers. The purpose of the course is to produce graduates with skills that enhance their ability to investigate cybercrime. It introduces the concepts, principles, and professional practice in forensic computing and cybercrime investigation. The training is delivered mostly online with annual examination sessions taking place in Dublin and in associated training centres.
Syllabus
This is a two-year part-time course. The first three semesters of the course are made up of six examinable modules covering the following areas of investigative expertise:
- Principles of forensic computing
- Disk and file system forensics
- Operating systems forensics
- Common forensic computing techniques
- Automation of digital evidence analysis
- Internet and organisational networks
- Internet forensics
- Investigation of cybercrime
- Management of cybercrime investigation division
- Future directions in forensic computing and cybercrime investigation
The fourth semester comprises an individual research project on a real-world topic in forensic computing and cybercrime investigation (e.g. how to analyse a particular technology or how to investigate a particular type of cybercrime).
Entry requirements
Students entering this course will be expected to have an employment contract with a law enforcement agency and to either have at least a second class bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a cognitive discipline or, alternatively, a signifiant amount of training or practical experience in forensic computing/cybercrime investigation. Each application will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
