How can I 'break into' the UK Computer Forensics industry ?

Post Posted: Apr 16, 05 22:55

Hi,

I am 35 years of age, have 14 years IT experience of PC operating systems, hardware and networks.

After a career break of 3 years, I would now like to train to become a computer forensic investigator. I don't have any legal/forensic experience, however, I'm willing to learn.

Bearing in mind that I live in the UK, would anyone have any tips on:-

1. What UK courses are currently available to equip someone with the necessary knowledge for a computer forensic role ?

2. Any recruitment agencies that might specialise in UK computer forensic roles.

Would appreciate your feeback. Thanks in advance....

Hi Karen

I'm 35 too, yey for us, good age! My background started in IT, moved to security and then terminated (so far) in forensics as I really love it here. I didn't have legal or LE experience either but that has come with time.

With the kicker of a security background, early on I learned the basics via the web and free downloaded tools then did training courses with the main vendors (Accessdata FTK and Encase) and then have progressed from there with general experience. My business has focused almost solely on Corporate fraud and is a specialisation for us.

The best way 'in' to the industry is to get a job and learn as you go, either in the private sector or via the Police. In the meantime learn the basics, follow this forum and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Sorry that my company isn't recruiting trainees at the moment.

Hi Nick,

It's good to know that there may be some opportunities out there, either the Police force or private sector.

Thanks for the post.
