Perhaps instead of just starting threads with questions you could answer or provide some feedback or do some research.

I think your response, "Maybe you should start by doing so…" borders on being rude.

It seems to me that this question crops up often - and, as debaser_ points out, it is usually followed by the same answers and the same rebuttals.

Let me put it back to you as a student/newbie

You are learning about tools (you say EnCase and FTK notably, as well as work experience) and techniques, which ones do you find cumbersome or inefficient ? How would you improve on the day to day tasks ? Lack of documented knowledge is as big a problem as full disk encryption.

You also say in another post that you have a BSc in Information Systems and Security. Anything there that you can see as being relevant ?

For every one "new problem" there are a thousand examiners thinking "Oh b****r, EnCase/FTK crashed again." or "I wish it wasn't so slooooow."

Something that concerns me about the original post is the "I'm new" and then asking about challenges in the industry.

If you're new, wouldn't you want to learn about the industry/community first, and then worry about the challenges? I mean, you're going to get a lot of different responses…the LE community is different from the community that supports law firms, and the corporate/public sector community is different from both of them. What is a challenge for one community, may not be for another.

Azrael hit the nail on the head…I generally tend not to worry so much about things like steganography, etc…I focus more on my current engagement, and learning as much as I can both during and afterward.

Cops are concerned with pictures and movies of CP…I've shown many how to determine who viewed them and when, as well as to see many other things. Last week, I was extracting OLE/structured storage metadata from Excel documents to get the last author and last printed date, and this week I'm analyzing SQL injection (again). Different worlds…
