New Legislation came into force

http//www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/new-powers-for-police-to-hack-your-pc-1225802.html

Couldn't find it on BBC news, wondering what people on the forum think about this power?? Currently I am not working in the field but I am a part time lecturer and I know my students will be deeply disturbed by it.

For one I am glad the police now can tackle online fraud (a little bit) more effectively but I am concerned about the privacy and ethical issues involved here.

Thanks in advance

Wow - not cool.

I thought we could be bad sometimes, but this is a pretty flagrant slap in the face of civil liberties. Next stop, police state!

Sorry to disappoint you, but this new legislation has been in force since Regulatory Investigative Powers Act 2000 came into force.

The difference is that police are now using newer technologies to surveille various criminal activities. The guidelines and law is very strict and has to be aauthorised for "SERIOUS OFFENCES" only and has to be authorised by Chief Constable. These powers are used very sparingly and there is no chance of going on a fishing trip to catch out the normal person in the street.

If you want to know more I suggest looking at RIPA 2000 and its principles.

I am currently researching warrentless police surveillance in relation to RIPA 2000 and the impact it has on the Human Rights Act and the ethical implications of it.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any cases in which the police have used evidence gathered in this way?

Also personal opinions would be helpful to get an idea of how the industry views the powers as well as how individuals view them.

This would be called an epic fail on the UK people. It's a sad day. and the "serious offenses" mean nothing they can still snoop around if they want.

Sorry to hear the news fellas US will follow in line like always.
V for Vendetta haha!
