Hi guys,
This is just a bit of research but I cannot get a physical image of the galaxy s3 handset. I am using XRY. XRY brought up a rooting message, which i tried which did not work, the process ended in errors. I have now rooted the handset but XRY starts then crashes half way through.
Is there any way I can get access to the file system so I can have a little dig about? I have installed root viewer apps on the phone but I want an actual image of the device if possible but its just not happening.
Is this a troublesome handset to deal with?
Thanks
Ensure you are using the correct cable with XRY.
The microUSB 2 cable is required to place the handset into download mode.
thanks for the reply,
I did check the device manual and in XRY, and it did not suggest that I need to place the phone in download mode? I just used a standard cable, would that make a difference to the extraction i.e. cause it to fail?
I don't own XRY, so I cannot tell you if it needs the phone to be in download mode. If it needs an UART cable you should use that. How you get into download mode (button-combo, JIG, cable etc) doesn't matter.
If I were you I'd do it the easy way, grabbing the entire ROM incl. all low level partitions. If you need only specific partitions type
cat /proc/mounts
to get a list of your device partitions.
Want the entire ROM use the following command
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/sdcard/mmcblk0.img
Changing 'if' and 'of' restores the whole thing, mmcblk0 is basically saying 'take all partitions there are'.
Image will be dropped to SDcard with above command, make sure you got enough space left.
Thanks Bendroid,
Apologies if I sound stupid here but I have never heard of the method you are suggesting - a dd image of the phone?
How do I do this, do I need an app or program to do what you are suggesting? is there an available tutorial?
you said type "If you need only specific partitions type .." but where do I type this?
Thanks again for the reply
i think I have just worked this out - i presume you are refering to the android terminal
Arrg, sry for not being specific enough, my bad.
Yes, you're absolutely right, need to have ADB up and running. There is a minimal ADB bundle floating around which just contains fastboot and adb drivers and weighs in at 3mb or something like that, should be sufficient. The whole method is quick and reliable.
Get back to me if you need any more advice.
Does Samsung KNOX cause issues for acquisitions ?
Well, Knox may cause issues when rooting the handset/after rooting, that's why most Superuser Binaries prompt you to remove Knox from system upon first launch.
I have no experience with aquiring images from phones with changed Knox warranty bit.
Don't forget, Knox was designed to preserve phones exactly from what we're doing - tampering with devices.

Which Galaxy S3 model are you trying to examine? There are quite many models of the S3 and XRY can dump most of them without the need for rooting.
What version of XRY are you using?
