Viewing Lotus Notes (NSF) Mailboxes

Post Posted: May 04, 07 08:14

Hi,

Can anyone recommend me a few tools to view NSF mail boxes? currently i have email examiner from Paraben but it does not support NSF mail format. I know that the network examiner from paraben supports Lotus Notes Mails.

Can anyone recommend any other tools which are preferbly open source??

Thanks!

Bregan,
What you can do is to convert the .nsf file into a .pst or .dbx and then use ol2mbox (available at sourceforge.net/projects/ol2mbox) to convert PST archives to MBOX format if you wish so. Alternatively, you can use Encase to view .nsf files directly.
To convert .nsf file to various other formats, you can use Transcend Migrator (http://www.transend.com) or XitNotes (www.lotus-notes-export.com/XitNotes.asp ) or Notes2Outlook (http://www.softwareforlitsupport.com/)
But I guess all of these are commercial...
I know you asked for open source solutions but I could not find one which allows to view .nsf file directly or even converts it to a more easily parsable format.
If you are able to convert the .nsf file to a .pst or .dbx or individual messages, you can use dtsearch to index them and search for evidentiary data.

I dunno how much of that was of help, but still my 2 cents..

Not open source but EnCase V6 does open NSF (I think 5.0+). And I hear they are working on encrypted ones as well.

I use NotesPeek (lotus) - freeware, can see all meta fields like outlook spy (for PSTs).

Hi,

Being a forensic expert myself, I mostly face such hurdles. During a similar situation where i had to access the emails of a Lotus Notes account, i used a freeware.

The tool that we used in the process was – www.lotusnotestooutloo...iewer.html

It proved quite efficient at work, as not only was it a complimentary utility but it was also upgradable. That way we were also given the option of getting access to advanced options.

You can try this tool, it will probably help you to open & view NSF mails.

Thanks

Hi,

Quest Recovery will also do the job - was acquired by Dell (last year i guess) so you will be able to download it there probably. Support is good so far.

If you have a set of NSF-Files where an account was archived at various dates (like a weekly, monthly backup) you will be able to save all data into one pst file.

Be aware that converting lots of NSF may result in an very nasty piece of work that may take longer than expected.

hope i could help,
yours

I thought you were a Board Archeologist Shocked , you just replied to a thread dating back to 2007, hadn't you noticed...

...and seemingly that tool is not freeware, it is a limited test app:

Use Free Tool to Convert Lotus Notes to PST before Purchase

You should test Lotus Notes to Outlook migration tool before investing in this, free version is available for testing that shifts 16 items of each folder from Lotus Notes to Outlook file and supports NSF file upto 500 MB size. After clearyfying all the doubts and queries you can purchase our licensed vesion of Lotus to Outlook migrator.

Download Free Version

With Demo Edition of Application, Migrate file from all the foldes.

To transfer data to outlook download free version of software now. Free trial of this tool can be availed by user with demo edition available online. The free version tool is available for user so that they can measure the efficiency of software by migrating NSF files.

The free demo tool export only 16 items (emails, contacts, calendar, journals, to-do-list) per folder of Lotus Notes less than 500 MB size

Unless you wanted just 16 random items per folder from a rather smallish NSF, allow me to doubt that you were able to carry the investigation with the "freeware" version.
