Hello,

Is maybe someone already collaborated with PCB solution company?

You'd be much better off going with www.donordrives.com for PCBs. They have pretty much any PCB you could possibly think of, and they actually have the proper equipment to transfer over / adapt the ROM code so it'll be compatible with the original drive.

However, you should know that with modern hard drives PCB failures are increasingly rare. Even working in data recovery full time I don't see that many, and most I do see are older pre 40Gb size drives. I'd say it's around 1 in 100 cases nowadays, and most of those are just related to a bad TVS diode which can just be removed to make it work temporarily. Far more often I see cases that are needlessly over complicated because people attempted their own PCB replacement and ended up losing the original PCB. For some brands such as Toshiba and modern Seagate drives a lost PCB is game over for data recovery.

What do you mean "collaborated"?

All I can say is that I bought a replacement PCB from them once, and I have rarely experienced such an excellent and professional service/assistance.

A few years ago (2013) I had the need for a replacement PCB for an old IDE Maxtor disk, and I contacted them asking if one of their boards was compatible.
They swiftly replied, providing me with some technical info, and I ordered the board.
Even if it was a low price item, if I recall correctly less than 50 bucks, they were extremely courteous and supporting, they (actually a very nice guy named Kevin) e-mailed me a few more times with some suggestions and the shipping details - and besides that - the item was sent perfectly packaged and with - as a bonus - a suitable Torx screwdriver.

HTH …

Hi
As a Data recovery service provider I will recommend to maintain database of as much as possible donor drives or pcb's.
There are hundreds of models from different manufacturers so it will be big task but getting older donor pcbs will be difficult year after year.

every make of disk has different criteria for compatible pcb but for most of them matching PCB revision is must. Some of the Drives like WD My passport are having additional hardware chip for data encryption .Whatever written on disk goes through it in encrypted format , while coming out again it has to come from chip only. Some of the Hybrid drives (Nand flash +hard disk) are having additional rom for SSD part.
In such cases only pcb replacement may not work , you will have to use tools like acelab PC3000 udma ( even it has limited support for hybrid drives)
PCB quality of Desktop Hard disks is very low. I recommend to desolder rom chip and put it in donor instead of repairs because modern pcbs are multilayer with dense SMD. Removing chip and putting it is heallty donor is safe and professional way.
Some of the drives like Seagate need alteration of ROM , so you need to read rom .Its better not to take any chances as ROM is very crucial components, In some models of WD rom can be regenerated from SA ,however in Seagate that is not the case. If original rom is not available recovery may not be possible or will be costly .

Do you mean database or warehouse/stock? ?

Hi jaclaz

If you make a software application database then may be searching will be easy. But you can simply make excel listing like I have done.

Really there is some kind of miscommunication. ?

If you have a database you have ONLY data.

If you have a stock/warehouse of disks/PCB's you have the actual physical things that may become of use when needed.

Having an inventory of the warehouse/stock in a database (or Excel spreadsheet) is a common way to find the item you need when you need it, but you need to possess and store the items (i.e. build a warehouse or stock of the actual items) BEFORE the data related to it.

The issue is not to "maintain database" (as you stated) but rather to procure the donor drives and PCB's (people usually have this strange habit of wanting money for these items, 1000 used drives at an average of 20US$ each will sum up to a nice, round, two thousand bucks investment ), have the space to keep them, store them in a given order, have the time to check them and finally input the corresponding data into a database, and of course maintain the database in sync with actual stock (and even once you have everything setup, there remains the problem of maintaining the stock well assorted).

Of course if you have 14 (fourteen) donor drives in stock, then making a database of them might be not really-really needed, a piece of paper would be enough (and if such a database is actually needed, maintaining it won't be a problem).

We currently have 800 pcb's cleaned and stocked carefully. It does not need fortunate to make stock of pcbs .You can get them in scrap and dead hard disks which you can buy at throw away price. You hardly need any space either to stock 1000 pcbs. Once you do it then you will realize how simple but useful this is

Curiously enough I can see how simple but useful this is even without doing it. )
