Hi everyone

I have a Samsung S6 Edge which has Nougat (7.0.1) on it. I wish to root the device so I can get as much data from it as possible. However I can't seem to get into download mode for it. the facts regarding the phone are as follows

1) Samsung S6 Edge with android 7.0.1 (Nougat) Device has cracked screen but when turned on the usual android screens can be seen just fine.
2) Developer options have been enabled. However there was no OEM unlock option within the develop options menu.
3) I want to obtain as full a download of this device as I can do. I do not have access to JTAG / Chip Off and these will not be options at this time.
4) I have tried a myriad ways to get into download mode including

I have tried the Power+Vol down+Menu method;
I have tried doing it via ADB, using the 'adb reboot download' command;
I have tried holding volume up + volume down plus power and when it turns off only holding volume down.

In all the above cases, the phone screen goes black. The phone isn't turned on though, and I can see that it isn't just turned off as if I just hold the power button nothing happens. For me to be able to restart the phone after attempting download mode, I have to hold power + vol down for ten seconds. It is as if I am being blocked getting into download mode.

5) I have tried to see if there is a property that shows that the download mode is blocked using the 'adb shell getprop' command, but out of all the properties, I can't see anything that would indicate whether the phone is locked or not. Here are five lines that I believe are relevant

[ro.boot.odin_download] [1]
[nfc.fw.downloadmode_force] [0]
[ro.oem_unlock_supported] [1]
[ro.boot.bootloader] [G925F*****]
[ro.bootloader] [G925F
*****]
(NB the stars have been put in as I believe the info provided by the command maybe a unique identifier for the phone.)

Does anyone have any idea why I can;t get into download mode for this phone?

As a second enquiry, the whatsapp messages are stored on the sdcard but are encrypted with the .crypt12 functionality. When I tried to use the whatsapp key extractor tool it doesnt work, I believe because the older version of whatsapp cannot be installed into it. Any ideas for getting the whatsapp key out?

The hardware jig doesn’t work anymore with the S6.

I find it interesting that the phone is running 7.0.1, I only encountered 7.0 with this model so far. A quick check on Sammobile.com confirms that there is no 7.0.1 firmware available for the g925f.
Maybe it is a fake Samsung?!

“adb reboot download” Should work. Does the phone fully boot, can be unlocked and you enabled adb access and confirmed the fingerprint prompt? Does the phone reboot when you execute this command?

Some S6 don’t have oem unlock (FRP) but use reactivation lock instead. This is controlled in the security settings under the Samsung account setting. So when in download mode it should either say FRP lock off OR reactivation lock OFF for Odin to work. I presume your goal is to flash TWRP, that’s what I would do with an G925f.

The standard hardware key combination for download mode is power, vol down, HOME (the middle Hardware button). You should press and hold these while the phone is turned off.

When you tried enter download mode and the screen goes black, did you try connecting it to Odin anyways and see if it is recognized? (Blue Box)

The WhatsApp Key extractor probably doesn’t work with android 7 anymore because the apk downgrade method doesn’t work anymore. To access the key or anything else in the /data/data/com.whatsapp folder you need a full physical dump or root access.

Hi Sam

I have been a bit sleep deprived recently due to a new baby! I only say this as the OS is 7.0 NOT 7.0.1. that was a sleep deprived error on my part!

I didn't try connecting it to the Odin software as I was concerned about bricking the device if I couldn't see what was happening to it. I probably should have done that.

'adb reboot download' sent the phone to a black screen. What is the fingerprint prompt? From what I remember, I removed that security feature from the phone so that it didn;t stop the download? Should I not have done this?

Thanks for your feedback Sam.

I can confirm that download mode jig works on newest samsung phones too (i've an authorized service center)

The only difference is you need to manuallty power on phone. In older phones inserting the jig was enought to go automatically in download mode.
