Computer Forensic Graduates....

Post Posted: Jul 06, 06 21:36

Just wondering if there are any other graduates here in the UK who are finding it ridiculously hard to find work - or is it just me? I have signed up to X amount of job sites and forums, regularly check for vacancies and I gotta say its one hard nut to crack Crying or Very sad It's the old adage of the catch 22 situation unfortunately.

Have there been any success stories that you know of?

Are you right out of undergrad with no experience yet? Any internships or co-ops? Thats probably your problem. I cant see anyone jumping into CF right out of undergrad without some luck. I only say this because I had a hell of a time finding ANY job right out of school because the lack of an internship while i was in school.

Maybe you need to fix up your resume more as well. What was your major?

Basically self funded my Masters degree in "Computer Forensics & Information Security" and have passed all my final exams and just have my dissertation left to do (which means I can now look for work as the dissertation is not lecture based).

It's crazy as it's been nearly 3 years learning covering pertinent topics and relevant laws and even learning to use Encase. What has been disapointing is the severe lack of internships/training facilities from local businesses etc.

Has anyone been able to jump into CF roles from uni or how are you getting experience?

Ah so you have a masters? I dont know why you would be having problems then. Do you have relevant work experience?

Posted in another thread - David Sullivan is the guy to contact in the UK regarding recruitment for CF jobs. You might want to give that a shot.

I think its really down to lack of work experience per se that is going against me which quite simply sucks ass as I have spent all this time and money trying to specialise in this field but am just finding obstacle after obstacle!

**EDIT** I have already sent David Sullivan my CV and applied for various posts thru his website but have not had any feedback whatsoever.

Were your courses heavy on technology? Was your undergrad degree in CS or a related field? Get a job that deals in technology for a little while and work your way into CF. No one starts out in their dream job. Any progress in the right direction is good.

The MSc consisted of:

University Of East London (UEL) – London

MSc Information Security & Computer Forensics

 Internet Law
 Seizure and Examination of Computer Systems
 Strategic Technology Management
 Network and Distributed Systems Security

My previous experience has been mainly based in the public sector having worked in the medical field and also in the social services before deciding on a career in Computer Forensics.

Realistically then, what kind of jobs should I be looking for then? I assumed that I should be able to walk into a CF related job straight outta uni. I still have my dissertation to do before I get my MSc qualification altho as it stands I have enough points for a Post Grad Dip altho obviously I intend to finish the dissertation in time for Christmas and get the full monty of the masters qualification Smile

**EDIT**

My father had kindly offered me a property in the Docklands (within arms reach of canary wharf and the old NHTCU building) which he will soon be rennovating and suggested having a purpose built computer forensics lab installed. It's a shame that I am not in a position to take him up on his offer tho as I just don't have the experience or funds to justify going it alone at such an early stage in my career. I told him that I may take him up on his offer in a few years time if it's still available. Talk about gutting tho lol!
