I’d like to get the forums opinion / experience on SMART from ASR Data?

Pros and Cons.
Reliability.

Thanks,
Chris

I've only used the trial/download version in a test lab to get the feel of it…never used it in an actual case. However, it seems to me to be a great product, for a commercial paid for one, anyway. I like to use normal Linux utilities for a lot of investigations, so I was pleased that there is a commercial Linux-based product out there for forensics.

Pros Fantastic, intuitive interface that flows logically, that you can use without having to be a *nix expert, great tools, and full functionality you would expect from a commercial product.

Cons Unlike using a Helix or plain old knoppix boot CD, the price is a little cost prohibitive for a small-time independent. Better suited to a company that can afford it.

Just my humble opinion, of course…

Chris,

Do you have any specific questions, concerns, or goals?

I've SMART for Linux since it's inception and I do like it. It works for a lot of what I do, so my return on investment has been high. Like all tools, it's not for everyone in all cases.

Features that are outstanding include;
- acquisition engine
- authentication engine
- filtering
- raw data viewer
- file system study

It does have a price tag, but I believe it's warranted and well worth the investment (again, this would depend primarily upon your needs and goals). Like most GUI forensic tools, it may make you more efficient, and there is a value/cost associated with this.

regards,

farmerdude

Hi Farmerdude,

Thanks for the feed back, and by the way, loved the book. Anyhow, I currently own three different commercial software packages, Encase, FTK, and SMART. Unfortunately, I have not had much opportunity to process any cases with SMART as of yet. In my spare time (what’s that?), I plan on reprocessing one of my closed cases to see what deltas if any SMART will detect. I’m also interested in the processing speed.

Chris
