Well, if almost *any* sector actually *needs* Information Security, it would be easier/faster to list those that don't need it.
Like, you know wink

  • Rabbit breeding
  • Ice making
  • Street entertaining
  • ….

Seriously, now, what do you mean? 😯

To have an actual need for a forensic department one needs IMHO to be in a very restricted number of sectors, like

  • Government agencies/Military (and their suppliers/contractors if dealing with classified material)
  • Police/LE's and similar
  • Financial Institutes/Banks/Credit Cards etc.
  • Law firms or similar (if large/very large)
  • Consultant (accounting/rating/auditing) firms (if large/very large)
  • Industries (large/very large) that deal with patented or "secret" formulas/procedures and or that have a R&D department

that's about all the ones I can come up with quickly, but I don't think that there are many, many more. ?

Street entertaining? Absolutely needs digital forensics. That mime murder necessitate mobile forensics. Rabbit breeding is big for pelts, and security DVR caught Earth Liberation Front buring the place down. DVR forensics is complex. Let's not even get into the third, because that just brings shivers up my spine!

You will always have a place in the financial industry, no matter which sector, which country.

… which are the sectors which Information security is a must ?

Those in which and to which information is worth its weight in gold. Also those in which membership in the club you got to belong to requires some form of IS framework.

At present, anything dealing with payment card information is one such sector.

Anyone doing potentially lucrative R&D work. Pharmaceutical companies is one possibility here.

… with a forensic department a necessary ?

The people who supply the IS people mentioned above with forensic servcies when anything goes wrong. For example, people who provide the card industry with investigation services. (You have to be be properly accredited, though.)

Law enforcement anywhere. (Think white-collar crime, like various forms of tax-evasion, or customs-related crime, etc. I've listened to a fascinating account of forensic investigation of point-of-sales terminals rigged to create fake sales receipts…)

I agree with athulin's point having been involved with quite a number of projects (the most recent project was only last week) for fixed and wireless (GPRS/WiFi/bluetooth) card terminals at airports for tour operators etc; security, usage of terminals and transactions, storage of personal data and traceability are influenced by PCI standards etc.

I would venture to suggest a forensic analysis of infosec approach might be useful approach, too.
