Good morning,

I'm spending a lot of time working on UAVs, and they're starting to show up in legal cases, so I put together a form to guide someone through the collection process. This is a work in progress and will be updated as I go.

Some dated 2 cents on the matter. I used to fly RC-FPV which most people refer to as drones. In my experience in the hobby I know certain makes/models of flight controllers contain useful data if recovered that can show where the plane flew. In other cases this data is not stored on the aircraft itself, but on the ground station. There are dozens, if not more, of flight controllers so identifying the one on any 'drone' to be examined would be key. Locating a person in the hobby who is very familiar with the electronics would also be helpful in ensuring that any data is extracted in the best way.

I have had one brought to my lab which was thought to have on board data, but it was an older version of a flight controller that had this capability and not firmware upgraded to store way-points, etc.

I wound up sending it to a chip off lab which was not able to get any useful data from it.

Again, just my dated 2 cents.

Greetings,

Your experience is still current and not at all dated. And it is getting more complex as more vendors enter the space with more GCS and data link options.
