If Sebastian would just spend a few thousand dollars for a makeover on his web site, his sales would go through the roof.

he doesnt spend money on marketing. rather, he spends it on making X-Ways better.

theres no such thing as a free t-shirt and a flashy website is one of the reasons FTK and encase cost what they do =)

Revenue, software development, and marketing go hand in hand. If he spent $5,000 for a web site makeover, he could potentially increase sales by, hypothetically speaking, let's say $100,000. So he would then have $95,000 net to spend on software development (i.e. hiring a couple of extra programmers). And he wouldn't have to increase the price of the product in this scenario.

This equates to say that otherwise esteemed professionals in data recovery and digital forensics are not the highly educated, very selective people they should be but rather behave like ordinary customers and fall for the "fluff" (and the bells and whistles) of a web site instead of looking (sometimes hard) for the "core" functionalities of a (professional) tool. 😯
Somehow a disturbing view. roll

Anyway, if a forensics tool, even very good forensic tool, is being developed by just one person, the situation is quite bad. Especially if the tool is used by lots of forensic analysts and companies, both commercial and government. There are a lot of really bad things in this world, anything can happen. Just imagine the developer has passed away. What's next? Who's going to support and update the tool? Nobody! And what will happen with all those people and companies? Also, the price has increased greatly in the last few years. Is the price fair with such risks? I think it does not.
