Digital Forensics Technician - Manchester, UK

Greater Manchester Police are now recruiting a Digital Forensics Technician, which is an entry level post within the unit. This is a great opportunity to start a career in one of the largest Digital Investigation Units in the UK.

Location: Manchester
Salary: £19,326 to £21,402 PA.
Closing date :29 Mar 2016


The Role

The main duties will include:
• Use forensic software and hardware to capture, retrieve, recover and forensically image digital devices whilst keeping a log of the processes used. Where necessary photograph or video record the steps of the process.
• Book property subject of examination into the unit ensuring continuity for evidential purposes
• Performing Triage process in accordance with unit procedures to identify exhibits with most evidential value
• Deal with telephone enquiries, offering advice on the services provided by the unit and the appropriate methods of seizing digital devices prior to them being submitted and transported to the unit for examination.
• To support the Digital Investigation Unit through the maintenance of equipment, server, property, access rights, security of the network, stock control, ordering equipment and other administrative tasks to support the efficient functioning of the unit.

Experience

Candidates should have:
• Experience of working in a technical or digital business area at a practical level.
• Practical basic working knowledge and understanding of the main functions of mobile phone and computer related devices.
• Practical basic working knowledge of the various types of digital devices e.g. iMac Computer, Windows Computer, Hard Drive, Smart Phone, Pen Drive etc.
• Able to understand the working components of a “computer system” and understand the function of each component.
• Knowledge and understanding of the ACPO Good Practice Guide for Digital Evidence and associated best practice and principle.


Skill and Abilities
• Sound administrative skills, including the maintenance of manual and computer based filing systems.
• Keyboard skills with detailed working knowledge of documents, spreadsheets, databases, internet browsing etc.
• Ability to work as a team to deliver the objectives of the unit and deliver an efficient service to customers.
• Ability to communicate in writing and verbally to staff / customers at different levels within the organisation.

Other Requirements
• Has achieved a good attendance record.
• This is a designated post under the Force Vetting Strategy and the post will therefore attract an enhanced level of vetting.
