A strategic alliance has been formed between Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police in order to enable both forces to meet the challenge of reducing policing budgets. By working more closely together the forces will benefit from greater operational and organisational resilience, making us the fourth largest geographic police area in England and Wales.

The main purpose of the role is to supervise the Digital Forensic Unit ensuring they provide a quality, high specification analytical and evidential service, to the stakeholders of Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police, in relation to serious offences, which can robustly stand up to scrutiny of the legal profession and to ensureISO 17025 standards are maintained and adhered to.

Ensuring forensic strategies are produced, negotiated, agreed and executed according to procedural forensic good practice, legislation and agreed policies. Providing expert legal and technical advice to staff investigating serious crimes involving all forms of digital media.

Main Responsibilities:

Manage the team’s activities and resources according to risk of death or harm to the victim or suspect and organisational threats. To ensure electronic devices relating to serious and major crimes are forensically investigated to known theories, principles and legislation ensuring compelling evidence is obtained and preserved.

Manage the unit's and personal caseload through negotiation with senior investigating officers and other stakeholders. Authorising and agreeing individual investigation plans.

Manage the relationships and welfare of the team and customers due to the nature of the material they are dealing with.

Professionally develop the team, by mentoring, actioning and monitoring specialist accredited training, coaching staff on research projects and to secure relevant opportunities to enhance their level of expertise complying to relevant ISO and NOS

Manage the inventory of equipment and authorise expenditure from the devolved budget including purchasing of outsourced forensic analysis to ensure best value of materials and equipment purchased within financial constraints.

Ensure an environment of continuous improvement and quality assurance is maintained, complying with the ISO 17025 standard, in respect of electronic forensic examinations. Ensuring that best practice initiatives developed in-house or with partner agencies are fully evaluated and implemented to deliver the highest level of service.

To actively ensure that complex reports produced by the experts are peer reviewed for court, that they are quality assured and that they support and uphold the professional reputation of Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police.

Ensure approved standard operating procedures are applied to all examinations. To review and act upon customer’s feedback to promote an enhanced service provision.

Review the suitability of technical equipment, software and standard operating procedures used within the Unit, making improvement modifications to ensure future needs and commercial development of equipment supported business cases in respect of purchasing new equipment.

Represent and promote the reputation of Warwickshire Police and West Mercia police and Forensic Services at various meetings and groups internally and externally to our partners. Deliver presentations, briefings and training to police officers as appropriate, and maintain close links with investigating officers.

Design, deliver and evaluate bespoke training and guidance for internal and external users to enhance their expertise to preserve and maximise evidence recovery and the understanding and use of digital forensic technology.

To undertake other duties commensurate with the nature, level of responsibility and grading of this post, as required.

Experience/Skills:

Qualified to degree level in Computer Sciences or information and communication technology or equivalent. Or Demonstrable equivalent experience through appropriate working in a digital investigation environment

Advanced certification in Encase software


Significant experience of providing expert legal and technical advice to range of audiences.

Experience of managing a team.

Excellent verbal, written and listening communication skills and be able to present complex issues to diverse audiences.

Ability to work accurately with meticulous attention to detail whilst under tight deadlines.

Demonstrate excellent time management and organisational skills.

Deal professionally with a variety of issues in an environment that demands confidentiality.

High level of understanding of web related and internet related technologies, computing software, hardware

Understanding in criminal investigation procedure/protocol and legislation appertaining to digital media.

Special Conditions

Regular travel throughout the Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police areas.

There will be a requirement to provide biometric samples for inclusion on the police elimination databases.

Exposure to disturbing/unpleasant images or tasks.

Mandatory training courses. There will be a requirement to pay back all or part of the training costs if the candidate leaves within three years
