I am a writer/researcher, new to this Forum, and have no formal Mobile-phone forensics training so please bear with me…
The case I’m researching involves a Nokia E90, in the latter part of 2010 and concerns deleted SMS messages.
Firstly, please, am I right in assuming that this device, by default, automatically saved all text messages to its internal memory?
Am I further correct in saying that it would be highly unusual if these settings were changed so as to store the texts onto the SIM card only ?
If the settings were changed so as to store the texts onto the Micro SD would they be automatically backed up on the internal memory ?
I’m trying here, of course, to rule out the possibility that any attempts to recover SMS’s from the phone’s internal memory may have been fruitless because they were all stored externally from the outset…
The E90 was stolen in the execution of a crime and immediately prior to the event certain text messages were both sent and received.
The mobile-phone was recovered 3 days later in the possession of a petty criminal who had seemingly exchanged his personal SIM card with that of the lawful owner. Big mistake !
It appears that during this time he had deleted those SMS’s, for reasons that are unclear, and efforts to recover them later, specifically a 'Bluetooth Extraction' failed.
It is my understanding that the E90 carried the Symbian S60 3rd edition OS and that data extraction from this platform was more complex than on previous systems.
Complex but not impossible ?
Can someone please explain to me (like I’m a five-year old!) exactly under what circumstances a petty criminal would have succeeded in removing text messages from a stolen Nokia E90 to the extent that he rendered them permanently deleted and therefore unrecoverable ?

perhaps I should have mentioned in my first post….
I have already searched the web, read the user forums and downloaded the Nokia E90 manual and yet still couldn't find a definitive answer - hence my plea to you, the experts.
For example Yes, it seems that some users chose to change the settings to save text messages onto the SIM card and yet nowhere can I find the answer to whether or not they would also be backed up/stored on the internal memory ?
In other words if the owner of this particular E90 had pre-set the device to store SMS's onto the SIM would the simple removal/destruction of that SIM card by the criminal destroy all record of those SMS's ?
Put another way, would such a setting bypass altogether the phone's internal memory leaving the SIM card as the ONLY memory source ?
