Hi,

I'm new here…thanks for letting me join. I went to school for digital forensics. Well, I have one class left for the program I am in. At the time of registration I relied on the school to direct me on what I needed. Recently, I tried searching for jobs and realized a majority require a bachelors degree. The program I'm completing is only a certificate. I asked the school if just having the certificate would help me get a job in this field and they said… Probably not. I'm annoyed about the situation. Are there jobs that accept certificates?

Thanks for your help.

No problem, there is a way out. What job are you looking for?

Based on this is practice required. A new employer wants to feel that you hang-in yourself with tech and bytes. See, you should find a way of passion and self-motivation. Just fix for yourself a tech domain like

Mobile Devices
Server and Networks
Cloud and Backups
Virtualization and Mirroring
Space Forensics (next big thing!)
Drones and UAVs
Cars and Vehicles

What is your biggest passion? Try to find out. AFTER you can look-out for additional certificates by manufacturers like, Cellebrite e.g.

As only few job adds from the U.S. come to FF, search for a main-U.S. job platfrom. I am Europe-based and dont know.

My personal tipp Become a 5G expert. You will win.

Space Forensics?
Drones and UAV's

This isn't Rolf's dream job list, the OP wants to know what will help.

OP, do you have any additional funds to take vendor training?
What state are you in?

Depends on the funds needed. I can to a point. I live in Missouri… I realize there are few jobs in this area so I may have to move out of state.

Moving out of state may be an option.

My opinion is always going to be increase your public profile.

Showcase what you know, or pick topics and write them up (it doesn't have to be ground breaking, or brand new…i wrote a blog post on looking at the word count field of microsoft word metadata….not ground breaking at all)

Register a wordpress/blogger site, start writing, attach your cv and say you're looking for work.

Worst case you learn something )

I would recommend moving if you feel like you're in a place with no jobs, or jobs you can't or won't take.

If i were you, i would settle down east near Cincinnati, according to the map there are 3 other large cities in the area within a 1.5 hour commute Indinapolis, Louisville, Columbus, as well as Lexington and Dayton. If you want with special things, position yourself geographically to be able to take those jobs, unless you can work remotely (which i guess in Forensics is rare since it needs hands on activities).

Myself i live near 2 of the largest cities in Sweden and also near lots of larger towns that has jobs. I can easily jump onto a commuter train each morning and reach them fast.

Another idea is to start by increase your experience in IT. A course in just forensics/a certificate won't make you an expert, knowing how networks work, how systems work, how users are lazy and even lie to cover up their stupidity, how databases work, how email clients work. You can learn a lot of that, if not everything, at home, but without proper experience few people will give you a chance to dig deep into forensics.

Take an online course in programming, like python. Learn to parse textfiles, read registry keys, write programs that download webpages. Everything you do and learn can increase your usefulness to an employer. Yes, there are plenty of tools, but not for every situation - and even if you gather a portfolio of tools - what will you do when they wont run on the next version of windows?

I played around with visualisation earlier. Now i may have a job writing data forensics/intelligence tools that use visualization, or i can move on to security visualization. I even used to play a certain online game, even that came to use in an investigation since i could point out the user ID in a configuration file.

You never know what skills you will need sooner or later. Just be curious and do stuff.
