Assignment

Post Posted: Mar 25, 20 17:35

Hello..

Can anyone help how to proceed with my assignment
This is the details of assessment

DETAILS OF THE ASSESSMENT

The Project requires submission of 2 reports based on practical work completed:
● Part 1a: Forensic Software Tools
● Part 1b: Files

Part 1a: Forensic Software Tools
In Week 5 of the module, you will be provided with the names of two forensic software tools and links to download the tools. These software tools can be used within a forensic investigation to recover pertinent information that may be the key to the case. Each student will have different pair of links – this is an individual assignment. You are to download, then test and use the software. You will not be given guidance on the functionality of the tool – this is for you to research. An ability to research unknown software is a key skill to develop as a forensic analyst.
A typical exploration of one software tool might occupy 6 hours of your time with another 3 hours writing up that part of your Report. The exercise will help you to realise the quantity of software available to the forensic investigator. You will also increase your knowledge of the forensic process.
Use each software tool as intended by the designer and write about each one covering the following:
● Name of software tool
● A brief (one or two sentences) indication of the licensing and terms of use of the software and any costs associated with obtaining it.
● The purpose and validity of the software – ideally you will find independent reference to use of the software but in some cases you will have to take the word of the software supplier/owner/writer – in this latter case, you should try to verify any claims they make about their software with your own practical work.
● A description of any practical work undertaken by you in testing and using the software
● A discussion and summary of your findings
● A single bibliography of references at the end of the report (Leeds Beckett Harvard format)

Part 1b: Files
The second part of this assignment requires you to continue developing your research ability. You will be provided with three files. Each student will have different set of files – this is an individual assignment. The files will have no extension or relevant name.
A typical exploration of each file might occupy 3 hours of your time with another 2 hours writing up that part of your report. The exercise will help you to realise the importance of careful research and detailed knowledge of file composition to a forensic analyst.
Research each file to identify it and its properties and write about each file. A template will be provided to simplify presentation of your report. You will need to include the following for each file:
● Correct Windows file type and extension, file header and footer, MD5 hash
● The standard Windows application that can open/use the file
● A forensic software tool that can successfully interpret the data in the file – this should show how you used the tool in processing the file
● Information contained in the file
● Internal structure of the file – this should be a technical breakdown identifying and interpreting the binary content of the file in detail
● A discussion of the methods used to achieve your results
● A single bibliography of references at the end of the report (Leeds Beckett Harvard format)

If you wish to pursue a career in the field of digital forensics, you will need to do a lot of what this assignment asks you to do everyday in your future job. Therefore, it is tremendously important that you try to complete as much of this yourself, so that you have a full understanding of the processes involved in a digital forensic investigation.

I would suggest you read your instructions thoroughly and familiarise yourself with the provided tools. As much as I'd love to help further, I think it will benefit you massively if you try and approach this yourself and do not seek direct answers to technical questions - many on this forum would be happy to point you in the right direction though!

If you are seriously struggling with any aspect of this, shoot me a message and I will try to assist as best as I can without making this too easy for you.

Degrees are hard, but the job is worth it!
