Anyone have anything good that's free?
My great aunt had some grand kids whom deleted some files that she needs for work (she is a nurse). Anyways, she has no clue how long they been missing - I told her to stop using the computer so they don't get written over. Anyways, she is bringing her HD up next time she's down my way and want's me to recover it. What can I use? She is using WinXP.

I did a Google for "free file recovery", and came up with this: ftp://ftp2.convar.com/pcinspector/pci_filerecovery.exe

Its freeware. I have no idea how well it works, but it does look like a professional bit of software. Somebody has obvioulsy devoted time and effort into programming it. However DIY data recovery kind of goes against everything we tend to advise here on the board, especially if the data has any value. But if you have nothing to lose, give it a try. If it works - a small donation to the author would be a good idea. http://www.pcinspector.de/spende_info.asp?language=1

I gave PC Inspector a try on a W2k box some time ago, it worked quite good and was very easy to install and to use.
