I was recently in a shopping centre which had a large steel roof, my handset immediately displayed sos only, i accept there is no coverage but…sos only? can this be used when all else cannot? in a similar way to the structure of the access class system?

Well your thread is in public now bigjon, so lets answer it publicly.

This is a Yes and No answer

The access control class (ACC) you are looking at is an ACC as you have read but emergency calls only are allowable where a network broadcasts point to multiple to all mobiles in a location area and is known as an Access Class 10. So YES, Access Class 10 is listed within ACC.

Also, NO, A user cannot be allocated Access Class 10.

Now this is where your scenario gets a little complicated. You were not being prevented from using your account because you had no credit or because there was no SIM card in your handset.

Your mobile phone detected that your home mobile network operator's coverage had dropped well below the accepted useable threshold or was not detected at all. In those circumstances, the mobile phone went into a sort of 'rescue mode' where you can't make chargeable calls to your friends and family etc, but you can make emergency calls that can be routed over any mobile network, it does not have to your home mobile network.

PS. OK I misunderstood you bigjon. I thought you meant you intended to send this post by email, not that your post was simply in the wrong forum area; hence my commnets at the start of my reply. OK I believe this discussion can be moved.
