What is everyone's thoughts on using the macbook Pro 13" for retrieval as well as using the Macbook for analysyt?
The macbook pro seems a bit more expensive the a PC laptop.
Also, in regards to using Office like applications, it is feasible? Is a typical windows camera, camcorder and etc compatible with it?
Greetings,
I've used two MBP's now as my primary laptop. If you use Bootcamp, you can run Windows natively, and well. If you use Fusion you can run Windows, Linux, et al in a virtual machine.
Loaded with RAM and disk it will be more expensive than a similar Intel PC, but it'll run OS X which the others will not.
Office runs perfectly on it. It supports all sorts of digital media input and manipulation.

Typing this on a MBP, although I am using the Winders side.
I have it dual booted, using Boot Camp, to XP.
I have VmWare Fusion loaded which runs Vista and 7 really nicely.
It isn't used as my primary forensic tool, but it does run EnCrash perfectly and I use the Mac side to image other Macs, Digi Cams, MP3s etc etc
I am a huge fan - you won't go far wrong!

Do you have the 13 inch model with 2GB ram, 160HD?
Encrash) Funny.
It's hard moving away from the PC, but I know a lot of the forensic community loves the macs for their uses.
Doesn't appear Xway will run on the Mac either (
Greetings,
X-Ways will not run on OS X. X-Ways will run on a Mac running Windows.
X-Ways will not run on a PC running Linux, either.

Have you tried running it this way, it is very practical or would it be better to just get a PC laptop if using Xway?
Xway will be primarily used for analysis and reporting..
Greetings,
Yes, I have. See comments above about EnCase - same holds true for X-Ways and most Windows based forensics tools.
I'd not use an MBP for my primary analysis machine - not enough power - but I do use a MacPro for one of my primary machines.
If all you want to do is run XWays, get a Windows machine. If you want to run Windows and OS X, then you're going to want a Mac.
And if you're going to do serious analysis, a laptop probably will not have enough horsepower anyhow.

First day back after the Christmas break - now, what is it I do again??
Reedsie,
13 inch, 2Gb, 250Gb HDD, 2.5Ghz Intel Core Duo.
I echo David's comments above - I wouldn't use this machine as my primary tool, it doesn't have the grunt (and, despite the fact I have been assured it isn't a problem, I still get worried by the heat generated inside the case when it is working hard).
I have been trying to convince our IT Support guys that an Intel MacPro is the answer to all our problems. There are several units in the UK who use these as their primary tool, and they love them. Unfortunately all I have here is a PPC MacPro which has its uses but won't dual boot. I am waiting for a decent Intel version to be forfeited so I can prove to the doubters that it is the way forward.
Right, how do you turn these computer things on then????
Nigel
I use my mbp for everything. fusion w/rhel5 & xp. Install xcode then use ports to install dclfdd. I did burn it up about a year ago, warranty covered fix but since then if I leave it running for several days running a disk image or encase I make sure I set it on a 20 dollar dual fan usb powered cooling pad, if you get one, get a cooling pad. i wondered if it would run cooler if i used bootcamp instead of fusion but then i would have to reboot )
