Hello all! I am currently taking a computer forensics course in hopes of becoming a CCE. I am just wondering if anyone who frequents this forum may have suggestions or possibly even experience in working in Ontario Canada..I am in a rural area but I am close to London and Kitchener/Waterloo Ontario as the nearest cities. I am just looking for input as to where I should be looking for employment in this field in the area or just any suggestions in general would be great.

thanks,

Shaun

Ok if no one has any info on my first question. Would anyone care to speak their mind on what other certificates or credentials would be beneficial for a potential CCE to possess?

I am interested in the obtaining a CISSP in the future….but for someone who just wants to break out in the scene I just dont have the experience qualification yet to be eligible for the CISSP cert.

I have read more negative information regarding the + certs such as A+, security+, etc, some people just dont believe they are indepth enough some people do.

Just looking for what people's suggestions and opinions are.

Thanks,

Shaun

Contact the Ontario Provincial Police or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and ask what qualifications are required to work in their technology crime units? For example, the RCMP insist that the CompTIA A+ certification be completed within the first year of employment as that provides a common foundation of understanding about computer systems hardware and operating systems.

Where are you studying computer forensics?

Shaun,

I was very close to emigrating to Canada a year ago and had been job hunting for computer forensics positions over a 18 month period. I had the advantage of having worked in CF already for law enforcement and had completed more than 100 criminal cases at that stage. I had the disadvantage of not being a Canadian citizen.

The problem I found in the end was that almost all of the Police forces in Ontario (and other provinces) was that you had to be a sworn officer to work in CF. London, Toronto and other cities in that region employed sworn officers. Ottawa was the exception in that they did use civilian staff. It's hardly commutable from south-western Ontario though but then with such vast distances in Canada having to relocate is more common that here in the UK.

Having chosen CF as a career you might find the number of jobs open to you are very limited but at least when one comes up you should have a good chance. Maybe you could look into coporate work until something comes up.

Others you should consider are Revenue Canada and the border controls unit.

Steve

Shaun, I see you've gotten some good responses to your first question, but none to the second. I'll taks a stab but hope some other folks will join in too.

what other certificates or credentials would be beneficial for a potential CCE to possess?

We have to remember that a cert is an independent body saying you have met some minimum standard. A few people belittle the Security+, CCE, or even CISSP because they hired somone with the cert and then the person didn't have the experience. They are blaming the cert for the lack of experience of the person but certs don't certify experience. Even the CISSP, which does require experience, doesn't require it in all of the domains. I know many CISSPs who couldn't configure a router if they had to, but that doesn't make the cert a bad cert. It just means that if I want someone to configure a router, I should pick a more appropriate cert to have HR seek.

So which certs are beneficial? The ones you can get. There are working examiners with A+, fewer with Security+. Are the essential? No.

For many CCE's, the next step would be ACE or ENCE if either is your tool of choice. If not, then prehaps one of ISFCE's advanced certs or a SANS cert. Lots of choices. Lots more opinions available from other forum members, I hope. HTH.
