Hello all! I'm working my way towards becoming a CCE in the near future. I was just wondering about which other certifications or other additional education people think would be beneficial to have in addition to becoming a CCE. I'd really like to become self employed in the future but working for someone is never off the table. I have strong skills leading into taking the CCE course but limited experience. I'm 23 so still alot of time left to gain some ) thanks for all your responses you can give me! much appreciated,

Shaun

I attained CCE last year. It has turned out be a good investment. Good Luck.

Following list will be beneficial and help you with the whole CCE process especially the 3 practicals that you have to successfully complete and pass.

- Pickup a book that explains computer hardware in depth. During acquisition process this knowledge is essential because you are going to encounter all different types of hardware configurations and environments.

- Get a good understanding of File Systems (NTFS, FAT etc..). Brian Carrier's File System Forensic Analysis is a good start.

- Locate free forensic software that is readily available and start playing around with it. WinHex, FTK Demo (5000 file limit), HELIX live cd, Foundstone tools, Sysinternal tools etc….are all available for free.

- There are lot of free images of dummy evidence available for download to play and experiment with. Don't have the links handy but they can be easily located with a google search and from what I recall some were posted in this forum as well.

As for certifications try some practice tests for Comptia's A+ hardware certification to assess your current knowledge and understanding of computer hardware and use that as a guide to see how much more you need to learn. Security + certification is a good foundational level certification to gain as well.

Thanks for your input its appreciated. Yes the CCE is really indepth..I'm liking it. The A+ and security + were something I was looking into. I know there alot of other certifications that go beyond the scope of Security+ for example its just like I mentioned though I don't have the required experience yet to be eligible for these other certifications.

Thanks again for your input it is greatly appreciated! Any others can feel free to throw in their 2 cents!

Thanks,

I am preparing for my CFE exam (www.acfe.com) test right now. Highly recommended!

The Certified Fraud Investigator cert does not include detailed tech info like the CCE, but does cover the legal, accounting, social, and other aspects of Fraud Investigations (criminal as well as civil).

The CFE cert should allow non-attorneys, for example, speak intelligently and expertly regarding the legal aspects of computer forensics, at least in terms of how the law dictates their responsibilities and duties.

Good stuff…

The CFE sounds very interesting. I would say from what I read, the CCE and the GCFA are very similar, with the CCE having a bit of a lead in popularity and a little harder to get. (but not necessarily harder to keep)

I truely believe that a Info. Security background with Technical response certifications are very important to this industry. Specifically due to the technical subject nature that we all deal with. Just check out the General Discussion Board on this forum. The SANS organization has some extremely technical certifications that deal with all aspects of Info Security from Incident Handling, Advanced Malware detection and response, to Penetration testing and Network Security. They are expensive though.

Regarding Certs. benefits, I felt it was necessary to show a high level overview of Info Security on a technical basis. The CISSP (more managerial IT Sec Cert.) and the GSEC (more technical in nature) provide this. A none tool specific CF cert like the CCE, GCFA show knowledge in the process and the technical requirements of performing Computer Forensics, and a Tool specific cert like ACE and EnCE show knowledge in the main tools one uses to perform CF.

My next cert I am looking to get is more of a Incident Handling Cert. (GCIH)
