Hi,

I'm a new at this CF forum and I need some advice. I’m coming from a east-European country where is a lot of activity in cyber-crime scene. In Januar 2007 it be part of UE and the new Penal Code already accept digital evidence in court.

Currently I live in Norway(40 km away from Ibas, headquarters),and after a failed marriage and crap job I need to "re-plan" my life.

In the last 3 years I prepared myself, in my home lab, for certification like A+,Network+ and MCP,MCSA 2003 I’ve gained a deep understanding about the game between the software and hardware. I’ve being able to find technical solutions regarding OS, hardware and networking. I have a good knowledge of hardware,MS Os's TCP/IP and OSI Networking models. I’m currently studying online for my CCNA certification at Cisco Networking Academy. I had hope that I'll get my feet in IT domain, but …no chance, since I don't have at least a bachelor degree or real, previous experience in IT.

Since December I've started to look over the EC-Council's CHFI self study kit v.2 which, even without experience in CF,I can observe and say that is a poor in quality. It’s ok,you get an idea about CF and you get the chance to get known with CF tools(all-demo),techniques are used today, but I'll think, once again, about getting this cert.

In the same time, a long Google search, gave me no replies about individuals who are in this field, in my country, and Police have some "geek guys" who are dealing with CF.I'm now thinking that I might have the opportunity to get myself specialized in this field and maybe some day, this it will be "my ticket back home" from …."Here"! cry x

I'm also thinking starting something like data recovery form various digital media ,CF and secure data eraser with tools like Ibas’s Degausser DG.02.I know all this need money, study and effort to get as soon as possible qualified for delivering such a services in my origin country and I'm ready to concentrate myself, full on this. And now comes the problems

Which learning path shall I choose?

After almost a week of research I found out that what it could be an opportunity to me ,to get the right learning path, it’s not suitable for my country and future plans
- The Cybercrime Institute
- Champlain’s Computer & Digital Forensics
because of American Law model ,even I’m very attracted about Champlain’s program.

I know about the CCE, EnCase ,and SANS cert and I’m still researching which one to chose.
What I really need, regarding my future plans and the learning way? Any advice, constructive comments/critiques it will be welcome, too

Flipin ek Rono that is a massive question. Please dont take the lack of answers as a lack of interest, the members tend to only post if they have anything to say.

It is likely that no one has experience in the CF industry in your part of the world and it is a very hard industry to break into anywhere!

Perhaps call IBAS and ask for a career interview to provide advice on where to start, you may find a friendly voice (or not). Speak to the Hi Tech Crime units?

Otherwise I certainly dont feel qualified to give career advice mate. Some others have asked similar questions in this thread, that a look at those.

All the best

Nick

Experience is what you are missing - I would hold back on paying for anymore courses and concentrate on getting some work to build up your real-world experience.

Why don't you start off by offering your services for free to show people that you are competent?

I've already forward my offer to work for free, with negative reply…and I'm still working at this "real-experience" problem.

Thank you,anyway;)

Is it possible for you to start up your own data recovery service? Then it is just a case of you marketing yourself appropriately.
