Hello all,
I have come across a BlackBerry 8900 which is doing something I have not seen before; the device is asking for a new password. Obviously without knowing what is going on, I have yet to enter one myself but has anyone else seen this and if so, does anyone know why the device is asking for a new one?
From my research so far it appears that the device was part of an IT/company policy and has been wiped. The policy however has remained on the device and is requesting the user enter a new password.
Any and all thoughts on this are most welcome!
Josh
Maybe the BES requires a new password to be used every so often? In which case I think you would still need to enter the current password before you can change it…
I have a small update for anyone who is interested…
I decided to try a logical extraction of the device using XRY and to my surprise, it connected and obtained the bare minimum of pre-loaded files; sample BBThumbs.dat files etc. I then analysed the device using UFED Physical Analyser 2 and managed to obtain quite a lot of deleted data.
I guess the bottom line of this post is that when asking for a 'new' password, no password is currently set and the device can be analysed as normal. It also could mean that my previous theory was correct.
Again, any and all thoughts are welcome
Josh,
Cellebrite UFED PA v2.5 that will be released in few weeks, will decode even more deleted data from a Blackberry Physical extraction.
