Hello,

I am currently developing a Digital Forensic Case Management System and am interested in knowing the communities 'wish list' for such a product so that I can ensure it includes all items that we will need. In addition, I would like to further develop the application for commercial purposes. I have attempted to research other applications, but am often finding old forum posts on the subject including the following from this forum

- http//www.forensicfocus.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=5168/postdays=0/postorder=asc/start=0/
- http//www.forensicfocus.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3995
- http//www.forensicfocus.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=9735/
- http//www.forensicfocus.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=2979/

Details regarding current applications are hard to find except for the usual marketing material which often uses marketing hype instead of clear descriptions of the features offered. From what I have seen so far, some of the applications either have features which will force you to use certain software products or require the user to manually enter information which could be easily entered via GUI Web Interfaces or integration with current systems extracting the data required as needed.

The system I am currently developing is setup as follows

- Front-end Web Application for Investigators (LE) to enter and submit exhibits for analysis to the Digital Forensic Unit
o Investigators will be able to view all submitted files and exhibits providing them with the following information
 Progress Status (assigned, completed)
 Forensic Member Assigned to file (including contact information)

- Back-end Web Application for Forensic Members
o Ability for a member to assign files/exhibits to a Forensic Member
o Forensic Members would be able to manage their files and exhibits entering the following information
 Start Date
 End Date
 Time to process
 Notes (write once, read many)
 Export data to excel and/or XML
 View Lead Investigator contact details
 Etc.
 Hard Copy and Digital Storage Location of data
 Links to Forensic Reports generated for Investigators
o All data will be stored in Database allowing for
o Customized Reports
o Built-In Reports

The application I am building will be integrated with our current systems to eliminate the need to re-enter duplicate information.

Please let me know what features you would want to see added. I want to keep the application simple, but powerful enough for a large percentage of Digital Forensic Businesses.

Thank you for any feedback you may have.

A simple question…

Is a new Digital Forensic Case Management System needed or do current products work perfectly for all current situations?

In my opinion there is always a need for a good case management system, but I do think you may be approaching it from the wrong angle.

A case management system should be able to do just that.
It needs to be modular and customisable so that it can be adapted to an organisations business processes.
It should enable an organisation to streamline it's workflow and organise it's cases.
Cases could involve People, places, objects and information.

To create an effective product you need to understand the working practices of different organisations and understand the diffculties they need to overcome.
