Welcome to the Forensic Focus forums! As an international professional community of digital forensics practitioners and stakeholders, we strive to make our forums a place for open, honest and respectful discussion. We acknowledge differences amongst us in terms of professional, academic, and cultural backgrounds and believe these differences can offer perspectives which help to advance the field of digital forensics.

Please keep the following rules and guidelines in mind at all times:

Search first.  Before posting, please use the forum’s search feature to see if the subject has already been discussed.

Use good subject lines. Topic subject lines should be brief and descriptive, with a short summary of your problem. For example:

Instead of:

  • Please help
  • Very urgent
  • I have a question

  • Document metadata question
  • Partitions with unrecognized file system
  • Where to store E01 images?

In addition, please post detailed descriptions of what you need help with, what research you’ve done and what you’ve already tried that didn’t work.

Remember that when people respond, they are taking time out of their own busy work schedules to help you. Avoid being critical of other forum users if no one replies to your post or is unable to help.

Help students if you can. University students are welcome to post questions about course content in a way that helps them to work out the answer to a problem on their own. Just as professionals ask one another questions when they find themselves stuck on a case, so students should be able to ask questions to help them learn.

Private messages. If you need help, consider posting in the appropriate forum first and allowing the community to respond, before sending a private message to a specific individual.

Avoid cross posting. Please post only one topic to the most suitable forum, rather than posting the same topic in several forums.

Be courteous. All posts should be professional and courteous. You have every right to disagree with your fellow community members and explain your perspective. However, this does not mean freedom to attack, degrade, insult, demean, devalue, or otherwise belittle others.

Be sensible. If your topic does not receive a reply, don’t bump it by replying to it yourself or be tempted to post another topic which is the same or similar. Instead, move on and accept that no one is able to help at the current time or they are not interested in the topic.

Listen to moderators. A key part of a moderator’s role is to improve the forum experience for all users. In order to use these forums, you agree to obey any moderator requests with regard to your forum usage.

Confidentiality and identity. To use these forums, you agree to respect the confidentiality of other forum users, including agreeing not to link another user with their identity. In addition, impersonating the identity of any person other than yourself is strictly forbidden.

One account per person. You may only register and use one account. If your account is suspended or removed, you may not create another account.

Advertising (and spam). If you provide services relevant to the digital forensics community, you may include a free link to your website in your signature. Advertising, including sponsored content, is available through partnership with Forensic Focus.

Spam is defined as any unsolicited advertisement for goods, services and/or other websites. Please note that posts with little or no relevant content also qualify as spam, as does sending private messages to multiple users.

Copyright. Do not post copyright-infringing material. Providing or asking for information on how to illegally obtain copyrighted materials is forbidden.

Offensive posts, links or images. Any material which constitutes defamation, harassment, or abuse is forbidden. Material of a written or pictorial nature that is sexually or otherwise obscene, racist, or otherwise discriminatory is not permitted in these forums.

Violation of any of the above rules may lead to a warning, suspension or permanent ban. If you see an inappropriate post, thread, or message, please report the thread/post to the moderators or admin.
