I'm looking for advice here. After 6 years in IT (system/network admin, consulting, support), I decided to change direction and go to law school. I'm in my second year and looking to leverage my IT background and legal training.

I have no law enforcement experience, and what forensics I've done has been for internal investigations (for less than a week). I've applied to computer crime labs and all of them have been stumped figuring out what they would do with me, since I'm not coming through the police ranks.

I'd love to specialize as a computer forensics/ electronic discovery expert witness, but without the LE background, forensics experience, I'm not as interesting. I could go back to school and get a MS in CS, but more degrees sounds like overkill. There aren't many cybercrime prosecution departments to directly apply to.

I realize this is vague, but where else might I go?

The Virginia Attorney General's Office has a computer crime unit of prosecutors and investigators (as do other states I'm sure). I have worked with them in the past and this sounds right up your alley. I'm not sure I would put the time in to a law degree if forensic examinations were what I really want to do. If you search for electronic discovery you will find some folks that specifically consult attorney's on electronic discovery motions. I'm not sure how involved they get in the actual forensics, but it may be worth a look as well.
