Hello everyone,

I have been hanging around this forum for approximately a week now and I have to say there is a lot of useful information here. I am a LEO in the United States with a background in computer science. With my background, my agency and I thought it would be a good idea to send me to some schooling for computer/internet crime. Even though the course was very informative, I left with the feeling that I really wasn’t provided the tools to take the necessary steps in most computer investigations. I did manage to see that my course instructor was using openaccess FTK program, but soon learned of the price associated with the kit and know that an agency of our size would not invest in such software/tools unfortunately.

I guess what I am asking for is some advice for LEO’s to obtain these tools for smaller agencies as well as training material on the gathering of evidence with these tools so that I obtain it and preserve it for court. Sorry if I am asking too much, just want to be pointed in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Look at the BCERT course. You get the training plus the needed hardware and software at no cost to your agency. Contact your local field office of the Service for nominations.

disclaimer I am employed by a partner agency of the NCFI.

DG,
Grants are always good if you can find them. Is your department an ICAC affiliate? If so you may find opportunities for equipment and training through them. If you're not you might contact the department holding you states ICAC grant and ask them how many cases they have seen in your area. You could turn that info into a power point for the admin and maybe they will get on board? You may also want to check with NW3C and see what they have available?

Thanks for the quick responses. The BCERT course looks great. I will be looking into it further. I will also be researching the ICAC, I do not believe we are affiliated in anyway.

Regards
