not much. Just basic concept of it. And i know that its not possible to track the exact coordinates of the cell phone users as its not yet a proven technique. i want to read more about it but have not found any good material on the topic.

I know that how GSM and UMTS network works.

Greetings,

We use cell site triangulation for locating, within a reasonable degree of error, missing persons in SAR situations. Even a ping off a single tower can give you direction and some idea of the range, particularly if you're working with a knowledgeable engineer. The antennas on cell towers are configured to only cover certain sectors and geography and power limit the detection range. Conversely, if the nearest tower isn't visible from the phone, the hit may come from a tower a significant distance away, possibly causing the searchers to make incorrect assumptions about the location of the phone.

Also, due to E911, many phones can be located via GPS coordinates.
