The most relevant part being the final sentence

“The average user won’t notice anything at all. Really, the only way to pick up on that is to do forensics on the phone,”

Anyone any recent experience of such?

Totally unsubstantiated/unconnceted conclusion (probably added to spread the usual FUD about nations-states and how dangerous they are) .

The whole point of (intelligence related) hacking (or planting spyware, etc.) is exactly that of making it in such a way that the user will not be able to notice any difference in operation.
That is theory and what the interviewed "expert" was referring to.

In practice and specifically in this case (from the same article)

Tech support staff discovered the suspected breach after Kelly turned his phone in to White House tech support this summer complaining that it wasn’t working or updating software properly.

Staffers reviewed the cellphone for several days and tried to decipher what had happened to it, the officials said. Many functions on the phone were not working.

If - whatever it is/was - comes from a nation-state, then their hackers did a very poor job.

How is this guy getting an 'ordinary' iPhone with customized profile? I always thought they get kind of blackphone or top sec hardened special equipment.

Is the time period of blackphones for White House personel over? Please update me.
